Students from partner universities are invited to pitch to create content about 50:50 for publication on 成人论坛 platforms. A student collective from Newcastle University won the 2022 pitch. Below is their experience of creating their mini-series and their films.

In the process of participating in the 50:50 Pitch, we conducted many rounds of research. We determined which industries are traditionally male-dominated and which industries cover the least minority and disabled workers. Our video concept matured in this process. When the idea came to life, we got lots of professional help from our university and the 成人论坛 team.

It's exciting to be able to speak out for women, people with disabilities, and minorities as part of the 50:50 Project.  While interviewing the 50:50 partners, such as EMAP, British Fashion Council, and New Civil Engineering, we felt their passion and effort to speak out for under-represented groups in their industry.

The process of achieving equality is never easy. But equality will become more possible after we insist on involving different voices, trying to create a more diverse industry.

Women in civil engineering

鈥淲e tend to think about civil engineering as very much working on a construction site and perhaps not for women,鈥� says Steena Nasapen-Watson, the Regional Director at Institution of Civil Engineers. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 not right. Anyone can do civil engineering.鈥�

This is something that rings true New Civil Engineer, which is a monthly publication that partners with the 成人论坛's 50:50 project. It is seeking to increase the number of women who are featured in their media content, in order to increase women's representation within the industry.

Disability in fashion

鈥淲e鈥檙e just as good models as anybody else鈥�, says disabled model Lauren Nathen-Lane, who has appeared at London Fashion Week.

She is on the books of ZEBEDEE talent, an agency that promotes inclusive casting by educating people and encouraging them to use disabled models.

It is something that chimes with the British Fashion Council 鈥� a 50:50 partner. The Council is aiming to diversify the fashion industry by monitoring across gender, race, disability, socio-economic, and sexual orientation.

Ethnicity in Tech

鈥淚've often been in cases where people are surprised that I'm the data expert,鈥� says Tech commentator Jeremy Boon. 鈥淭hey were happily surprised, but I noticed the fact that they were still surprised.鈥�

Jeremy offers insights into being an ethnic minority in the tech industry. He is listed on the 50:50鈥檚 contributor database 鈥� a tool that is supporting 50:50鈥檚 expansion before gender.

Moving 50:50鈥檚 focus from solely women's representation to include ethnicity and disability is in order to hear more voices from diverse backgrounds. As 成人论坛 Creative Diversity Lead Lara Joannides says: 鈥淭hose voices and those perspectives need to be heard.鈥�
