This book was written by Bristolian Reg Urch who during the first world war was trying to return home to England as he was trapped in Latvia where he had been teaching English. He was told the best way was to go via Russia however their borders were closed so he ended up teaching in Moscow. While there, he wrote an English textbook and also sent back reports of the Revolution to The Times.
Reg was eventually arrested and put in prison and when he asked the guard what would happen to him, the guards response was 'We generally shoot Englishmen'. Reg subsequently used this as the title of his book.
He was eventually released and went to Finland before later returning to Latvia. During the second world war, Reg and his family moved to Australia, the furthest place they could get to away from the war.
