This diary was written by Samuel Cattell during the Great War. Born in 1890, he went into the war as a royal marine leaving his family in Wells. Based on a ship, he served in the battle of Heligoland. In the diary he talks about the battle and also what life was like for a serving soldier.
In 1918 he left the ship and volunteered to go to France to fight in the Battle of the Somme where he was killed.
