Carnival Day The 30th Reading Community Carnival takes place on Bank Holiday Monday 28 May 2007.
| A costume from last year's carnival. |
The procession will be through the streets of West Reading, starting and ending in Prospect Park. Events start from around 12:30 pm and will go on until around 7pm. There will be stalls selling a variety of food and drink, as well as others of general and community interest. Blog Ok, so with days to go - its getting very nerve racking to make sure my costume is ready on time! The headdress (which includes big feathers and sequins) has taken a lot of work to get it just right听 - it will make me look very tall as it towers above my head but I'm sure it will look fantastic with the rest of the costume... when it's ready! My designs for the top part of the costume have been difficult because I have so many ideas听 - I'm just not sure how to compile them into one outfit. So, I've decided to customise a top that I like so I can make it fit the theme. It's yellow and will have blue included to fit the theme of the Bajan flag. For the skirt I've made a Bajan flag out of blue and yellow material that will match. Philbert (the costume professional) said I've got to make a standard. I'd never heard of this before - it's a symbol that summarises your costume - you hold it as you march along in the procession. I think I'll go with the trident symbol that appears on the Bajan flag - so that's something else to make...! The costume classes have given me so many ideas and inspiration for my costume next year - but I've learnt my lesson...to start the whole thing earlier! I'm looking forward to Monday - from what I've already seen the costume's are beautifully colourful and include so many themes that reflect the Caribbean spirit. ____________________________________________ ____________________________________________ The St Vincent Association will have costumes in their flag colours (blue, yellow and green) plus there will be pirate costumes to celebrate the film Pirates Of The Caribbean that was filmed around the islands. Plus there's going to be pure carnival music from Sounds of Steel pan orchestra and RASPO. There's going to performances from singers and DJ's, plenty of cuisine from chefs like Veronica Winter. All in all it's the chance to celebrate 30 years of a fantastic event - let's just hope the weather hold's up for us! Make sure you join me on Monday - see you there! |
