Just like sounds we hear everyday, music can be loud - like a noisy chainsaw or a lion鈥檚 roar - or quiet - like someone sieving flour or a tiny mouse squeak.
When the guests start to complain about the noise from the kitchen, Bella decides to turn it into music. Music which goes from very loud to very quiet - especially when Harry is around!
What other kitchen noises can you think of, and are they loud or quiet?
INTERIOR RESTAURANT KITCHEN - DAY - There is a loud noise off screen and smoke is appearing in the kitchen. Bella appears wearing a high-vis vest and safety helmet with visor and carrying a very loud chainsaw, which she is about to use to cut baguettes. Harry rushes in, panicked and interrupts Bella.
HARRY: Chef Bella! The guests are complaining -
Bella puts down the chainsaw and takes off her safety helmet.
BELLA: Complaining?! But everyone knows Bella make-a the best roast!
HARRY: No, it's not the food鈥 It's the鈥 noise. I'm afraid some are going to leave!
Bella takes off her safety clothes and is wearing her chef clothes underneath.
BELLA: Harry, Harry鈥 No, no. This is la musica of the kitchen!
HARRY: But -
Bella cuts Harry off before he can finish.
BELLA: Ah, okay. Look I know that things are loud at the moment - things are busy鈥
Bella gestures to the busy kitchen around them as she speaks.
BELLA: (softly and calmly) But once we get the orders out, things will be nice and quiet again.
HARRY: (sighing reluctantly) 翱办补测鈥
Harry exits.
Bella picks up chopsticks and begins to conduct. The kitchen staff appear and start to 'play' a quirky orchestral piece of music. One chef chops carrots to the beat, the other mixes ingredients. Initially, they all continue to work quietly and the music is soft but as soon as Harry is out of earshot, Bella clashes pot lids like cymbals and the music explodes into a loud and joyous phrase.
The service bell rings and Bella quickly puts away the pan lids and the music softens immediately. Harry enters and looks around suspiciously, while the kitchen staff work quietly. He waters a plant and exits. Bella grabs the pan lids again and the music returns to full volume until the service bell rings again. The pattern repeats a few more times, always quiet when Harry is there and getting louder each time he leaves, until the song ends.
INTERIOR RESTAURANT KITCHEN - LATER THAT DAY - Bella is wiping down the counter and Harry stands with his notepad and pen from taking orders.
HARRY: By the way Chef Bella - I got a compliment from one of the guests鈥 One said they really enjoyed鈥
Harry looks confused as he reads the last word on his notepad.
HARRY: The music?
Bella smiles.
BELLA: Well, I'm just glad it wasn't too loud!
Bella winks at the camera.
