If numbers are your worst nightmare, don鈥檛 worry: you鈥檙e not alone! Many people struggle with maths, but it鈥檚 often how you feel about maths that鈥檚 holding you back, rather than your skills. The good news is, you can change your maths mindset and learn to accept, or even enjoy, maths!

1. Stay calm

When faced with a maths problem, don鈥檛 panic! You鈥檙e probably already using more number skills in everyday life than you realise. So, the next time you鈥檙e stressed out by numbers, just take a deep breath and have a go 鈥 you might surprise yourself!

2. Just try it

Instead of avoiding maths, try setting yourself the challenge of actually tackling an everyday maths problem like splitting the bill 鈥 it鈥檚 good practice and, after all, no one wants to pay more than they should! You鈥檇 be amazed how much difference it makes when you approach problems in a positive frame of mind.

3. Talk it out

Don鈥檛 be afraid to ask for advice or check you鈥檙e getting it right. Ask someone you feel comfortable with for help. You can also use free online tools and apps 鈥 there are plenty out there, but the National Numeracy Challenge is a good place to start.

4. Take it slowly

You don鈥檛 have to hurry. Doing maths on your own terms and in your own time will allow you to work on your skills worry-free. You can also take the pressure off by writing things down.

5. Keep at it

Numbers can be tough but the more you do, the easier it will get. Like everything else, improving takes effort so don鈥檛 give up! Keep going and you鈥檒l see the results.
