Viking warriors have often been portrayed as horned helmet wearing, sword wielding warriors who went into battle with their long hair flowing down their backs - but is this really what they were like?
Although the Vikings had a language and alphabet they did not write a lot of things down. It was left to the religious men whose monasteries and churches were being raided by the Vikings to report on their exploits. Some historians however think of these writings as unreliable and use other sources such as archaeological sites and burial grounds, to try and build up a true picture of the Vikings. The evidence that historians have found would seem to suggest that the real Vikings were very different to those that we see on TV and in films.
