Where is Scotland?
- Scotland is one of the four countries of the UK.
- It is on the island called Great Britain, with England and Wales.
- Scotland has coasts on the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
- Nearly half of the people in Scotland live near the coast. There are hundreds of islands off the Scottish coast, including the Shetland Islands, Orkney Islands and the Hebrides.
What is Scotland's capital city?
- The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh.
- Edinburgh is built on lots of hills. Edinburgh Castle is on top of a hill that is actually an extinct volcano!
- Other important cities in Scotland include Glasgow and Aberdeen.
Famous landmarks in Scotland
- Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Scotland and the whole of the UK. There are lots of other tall mountains in the Grampian Mountain range.
- There are many lakes (called lochs) in Scotland. The largest is Loch Lomond. Loch Ness is also famous because some people believe that a monster called Nessie lives in it!
- Skara Brae is a stone age village on the Orkney Islands in Scotland. People think it is around 5,000 years old!
- There is a famous lighthouse at Neist Point on the Isle of Skye. It was built in 1900.
