Scott Matthews - Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall - 30/07/2007

When Wolverhampton鈥檚 own Scott Matthews announced a homecoming show at the Wulfrun Hall I jumped at the chance to see this up and coming star.听 Over the past year Scott Matthews has been compared to the late great Jeff Buckley and also more recent artists such as Willy Mason and Damien Rice, and with this intimate surrounding in the Wulfrun, we were all in for a great night. Emmy the Great Before we could see Scott Matthews in action, we had the compulsory support band, tonight coming from a group called Emmy The Great.听 Emmy The Great came on stage and played a powerful 30 minute set.听 With her mix of acoustic guitar and violin her songs sounded beautiful and also very catchy.听 She is definitely one for the future. When the support had finished Scott Matthews was next. Entering the stage to a rapturous applause he got straight to business and kicked off with the song 鈥淭he Fool鈥檚 Only Fooling Himself鈥. The rendition was word and music perfect and he had the audience in the palm of his hand. Wolves lad

Scott Matthews enjoyed chatting and talking to the crowd throughout the night. The Wolverhampton born lad had a lot to talk about as it had been so long since he had played in Wolverhampton. When we got back to playing some music Scott played noticeable fan favourites such as 鈥淐ity Headache鈥 and new single 鈥淒ream Song鈥. With the crowd joining in with the lyrics Scott who was constantly smiling on stage, he was clearly enjoying himself. You can clearly see and tell that influences play a big part in Scott鈥檚 music. When title track to the album 鈥淧assing Stranger鈥 is played with Scott singing, playing guitar and also playing harmonica, it鈥檚 easy to notice his Jeff Buckley-esque comparison. Also when playing 鈥淪till Fooling鈥 we see his comparison to Damien Rice with his guitar playing ability. Breathless With the night coming to an end Scott Matthews and his band had saved the best 'til听 last. When the start of 鈥淓lusive鈥 hit the venue there was huge applause. 鈥淓lusive鈥 sounded more powerful live then I had ever imagined and left the audience motionless and breathless. An instrumental song then ended the main set of the night.

After a brief wait Scott Matthews re-entered the venue to play one final song, and it was a special treat. When Scott played the start to 鈥淓arth To Calm鈥 the audience stood back and watched as Scott made his end to his homecoming in Wolverhampton. As he left the stage the crowd continued to cheer for more, but it just was not to be. People left the venue wondering why Scott Matthews isn鈥檛 as huge as he could be, and when will the world hear his sublime music. I wouldn鈥檛 worry too much; it鈥檚 on the cards to be very soon.听 Scott Matthews will be massive, he will be playing bigger and better venues in the near future, but this intimate show will live with me for a long time. |
