Running the full marathon

The marathon took place on a very rainy Sunday 7th September 2008 and hundreds of late entries applied to participate on the Saturday afternoon and morning of the event.

The annual event, which included a full and half marathon, relay challenge, 15K cycle event and children's mini marathon officially began at West Park with an address by the Mayor of Wolverhampton, Councillor Christine Mills.

Ivan Savage, Chair of the Marathon Committee, said: "What a fantastic event for the City of Wolverhampton.ÌýWe are thoroughly amazed by the outstanding number of entries we have received – 411 for the full marathon, 1498 for the half marathon, over 550 cyclists and 73 relay teams.

Triumph!

"The Directors of Carvers are overwhelmed with their staff's participation at the events over the weekend.Ìý We had fantastic support from them on both days, giving up their free time to help raise money for local charities (which we anticipate will be in excess of £25,000) by working hard at the Finish handing out medals, t-shirts and water to exhausted, but jubilant participants.

"We would also like to pay particular mention to all our sponsors, supporting organisations, committee members and key management team for playing such a massive part in the events.Ìý The Wolverhampton Marathon is certainly back on the running calendar and is hopefully here to stay for many more years to come."
