Ellie Simmonds switches on Christmas lights

More than 5,000 people watched double Paralympic swimming champion Eleanor Simmonds switch on Walsall's Christmas lights on Thursday 27th November 2008.

Hometown girl Eleanor, who won two gold medals in the 2008 Paralympic Games for swimming, said:

"It's really good - there's loads of people here. It's really scary! All my family have turned out and there's thousands of people here.

"It's so good getting Walsall on the map because all my friends from Swansea have never heard of Walsall before."

A line-up of stars including James and Oliver Phelps from the Harry Potter movies were on hand for the event and 'Britain's Got Talent' duo Signature gave a rousing finale of dance routines.

X-Factor favourites Journey South also performed a free open-air concert at the light switch on to the delight of fans.

Santas on the run

Hundreds of Santas took to the streets on Sunday 7th December 2008 as part of a sponsored run to raise money for Acorns Children's Hospital. Click the link below to see read our report and see photos:

Walsall market reopens

Walsall market reopened on Saturday 13th December in the town centre with free traditional Christmas entertainment, including a performance by 'Dreemz' who were finalists in the 成人论坛 Show 'Last Choir Standing'.

Traditional Christmas entertainment also takes place in the centre of town every late night Thursday and Saturday from 27th November onwards.
