Over 2 million interactions with Local 成人论坛 Radio stations since lockdown

As Local 成人论坛 Radio receives record listener calls, 成人论坛 Head of Audio and Digital, Chris Burns reflects on 2020 so far.

Over 2 million interactions with Local 成人论坛 Radio stations since lockdown Thu, 29 Oct 2020 13:30:00 +0000 /blogs/aboutthebbc/entries/b7c5e742-456a-4f3a-a52f-0b4f54613bca /blogs/aboutthebbc/entries/b7c5e742-456a-4f3a-a52f-0b4f54613bca Chris Burns Chris Burns

In the strangest of circumstances, 2020 continues to be a landmark year for Local 成人论坛 Radio stations. While behind the scenes we have had to adapt our guidelines to protect staff, our stations have never been more in touch with audiences.

The data shows this is true too. At the start of Lockdown all 39 stations across England launched Make A Difference - a virtual notice board for those offering help and those needing support. We have recently recorded that since then the stations have received over 2 million interactions from audiences.

The number of calls we continue to receive shows the power of community and the contribution local radio can make by getting closer to its listeners.

Radio has the power to bring people together and while COVID-19 is a global pandemic, its impact had been very localised and local radio has been uniquely placed to respond.

This has been particularly important with local lockdowns and now the tier system.

When Leicester became the first city to go into a local lockdown we extended the smart speaker news update service to Leicester, to help people there. We expedited the launch of a news service into Leicester in both English and Gujarati language. All news bulletins from 成人论坛 Radio Leicester were made available on-demand on Amazon Alexa-enabled devices to anyone who asks for the “成人论坛 Radio Leicester Update” or “成人论坛 Radio Leicester Gujarati Update”.

When the Liverpool City Region became the first area in the UK to go into Tier Three, 成人论坛 Radio Merseyside brought the Government press conference direct to listeners along with practical information on what the rules mean.

Our teams are cutting through confusion making sure listeners are both informed and given a platform to share their opinions.

The stations have stepped up in response to local unemployment too. 成人论坛 Radio Nottingham was the first station to launch a job campaign. Working in collaboration with the Department of Work and Pensions, and an army of career advisors and recruitment experts the station pledged to help find £10 million worth of work across Nottinghamshire. Since 16 other stations have followed promoting job vacancies and helping people find work.

Beyond the news, as well as plenty of entertainment, we have ensured listeners of all faiths have the opportunity to feel peaceful with weekly Hindu, Sikh and Islamic reflections and church services.

The Make A Difference across all the stations has become a touch point for heart-warming moments and the kindness of strangers.

It was the 成人论坛 Three Counties Radio Make A Difference team who first shared the story of Captain Tom Moore. He captured listeners’ hearts when he set out to do 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday to raise money for the NHS.

Soon, the rest of the world was cheering him on too, helping him to raise over £33million. In June, thousands of listeners showed their thanks by submitting a selfie salute in honour of Captain Tom Moore, to create a unique mosaic picture gift for his 100th birthday. The photos were uploaded from across the UK via the ‘Make a Difference’ website. Captain Tom was presented with a framed copy for his home.

In Essex a couple and their five pets were left camping out in the garden after their house caught fire, after a call to their local 成人论坛 station they moved into a house that evening.

On Radio Devon a key worker named Bob phoned in and said he was down to his last pair of decent shoes after walking five miles a day to work. With no internet access or shops open, he couldn’t find a new pair but a listener soon called in with a pair of size 12s to drop off for Bob.

Companionship has always been at the heart of 成人论坛 Radio but this year it has been more so than ever. That’s why earlier this month we launched our Pledge To Talk day. All 39 成人论坛 stations across England asked audiences to make a pledge to talk to someone they haven’t spoken to recently.

There was the Cambridge student left feeling isolated in her first term at university who was reunited with her best friend from overseas. There was Sue in Worcestershire who told the story of our campaign reminding her to call her terminally ill friend and what it meant to have that last conversation with her. Presenters and reporters backed it too, even 成人论坛 Radio Surrey’s James Cannon catching up with his old pal from Capital Radio days - Tony Blackburn!

This Christmas that will be more important than ever. Our teams are already packing the station’s schedules with lots of surprises and opportunities for everyone to keep pulling together and helping out in their hometowns.

This year we have learnt a lot of lessons, and I am very glad that one of those appears to have been that, no matter what, you can always turn to your local 成人论坛 radio station.

Fighting disinformation fast when it matters most Thu, 08 Oct 2020 08:00:00 +0000 /blogs/aboutthebbc/entries/2acce10f-85ff-4c4a-8be7-2011aa83c247 /blogs/aboutthebbc/entries/2acce10f-85ff-4c4a-8be7-2011aa83c247 Jessica Cecil Jessica Cecil

The US President is quarantining in the White House with a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease. There is a slew of false stories and conspiracy theories spreading across digital platforms and the US election is less than four weeks away.

There is always a lot at stake in the run up to any election. But now disinformation adds an extra element of the highest jeopardy: if voters don’t know what news to believe, how can they make an informed choice that will shape the future of their country? Might those false stories tip their thinking, deter or even prevent them from voting at all?

And thousands of miles away in South East Asia, another very different election - in Myanmar. But the same threat. We have seen there already how disinformation has stirred ethnic tension - fostering division, fomenting violence and promoting hate. As voters head to the polls for the second time since the end of military rule in 2011, the stakes are very high, the threat of disinformation great. And over the past 6 months, Covid-19 has exposed another dark side of misinformation and disinformation: it costs lives.

This time of global uncertainty and fear has provided fertile ground for falsity - unproven preventions and fake cures which sometimes prove fatal. One report puts the global human cost of bad information about Covid-19 at over 800 deaths in just the first three months of 2020, according to the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. If we can do anything to fight the most serious disinformation - to make elections fair, and save lives - we should. The 成人论坛 has stepped up investment and focus in its journalism around disinformation. Teams producing Reality Check, Beyond Fake News and others are working with the insight brought by 成人论坛 Monitoring to expose and debunk dangerous, and often malicious, falsehoods. But we believed there was more we could do in partnership with others.

A year ago the 成人论坛 convened partners across the world in an urgent challenge: at times of highest jeopardy, when elections or lives are at stake, we asked, is there a way that the world’s biggest tech platforms - from Google, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram to Twitter and Microsoft and major news organisations and others - from the European Broadcasting Union, the Wall Street Journal and The Hindu to Reuters, AFP, The Financial Times, CBC/Radio-Canada, First Draft, The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism - can alert each other to the most dangerous false stories, and stop them spreading fast across the internet, preventing them from doing real world harm?

We all believed trying something was better that doing nothing - there are audiences and users running into billions across this partnership who are potentially touched by disinformation. And this is important for the 成人论坛: with the commitment to impartiality at the top of our priorities we wanted to work with others around the world to try and prevent some of the damage done by false news.

We have been experimenting over the past year with doing just that. Turning good intentions to action that works. But we have now found a way to alert each other so partners are on guard at particular times of the highest jeopardy, ready for the most serious “break-glass” moments when viral disinformation risks real world harm. And we have done that without in any way muzzling our own journalism. We have been sharing alerts over Covid-19, and before that, over falsities which posed a threat to democratic integrity during the UK and Taiwan Elections. And now we are sharing alerts over the most serious disinformation in two very different elections - in the US and in Myanmar. And because different news organisations are most relevant in different regions, we are working with a wide and expanding group of publishers. In the US we are also working with the Washington Post, AP and the LA Times.

Speed is at the heart of the response because the most serious disinformation has the potential to go viral very quickly – and turn from words and images online to real harm in the real world. When a false story, from a fake “成人论坛 Breaking” Twitter account, claimed UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson was dead in April, a fast alert amongst the partners stopped the lie spreading across the internet and around the world, where it could have caused panic and moved markets. When people in the UK, and later Canada and the Netherlands were urged in Facebook and Instagram posts to burn 5G masts, feeding on the conspiracy that linked Covid-19 to 5G, again a fast alert played a part in preventing destruction that could have compromised the response of the emergency services and cost lives.

The Trusted News Initiative has evolved over the past year to become the only place in the world where disinformation is discussed in real time, as it happens, by some of the most trusted global news organisations and the biggest tech platforms. It is a significant step in the fight against disinformation, alongside other welcome developments in the past year such as the increasingly important role of fact checkers across the world. But the threat is changing too – all of us have to work out how best we can meet that threat.

Footnote - Partners involved in the Myanmar fast alert: AFP, AP, 成人论坛, CBC/Radio-Canada, EBU, Financial Times, Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Microsoft; additional partners for Covid-19: The Daily Maverick and the Mail and Guardian, South Africa.

Bringing John Lennon At 80 to 成人论坛 Radio 2 Fri, 02 Oct 2020 08:00:00 +0000 /blogs/aboutthebbc/entries/6e58c2ba-a7d1-43a7-b842-1bc9e9047f04 /blogs/aboutthebbc/entries/6e58c2ba-a7d1-43a7-b842-1bc9e9047f04 Liz Barnes Liz Barnes

When you mention the name John Lennon, any work project suddenly becomes that little bit more daunting. When you’re offered the chance to work with his children, well, the word ‘daunting’ suddenly seems rather meek. Having said that, when I was asked to produce John Lennon At 80 for Radio 2, I didn’t hesitate.

Growing up in the North West of England I had a deep fascination with The Beatles. This was probably stoked by the fact that my best friend’s mum had seen them play live in 1962 in my small Lancashire town, at the Co-Op of all places. She’d met them, even received handwritten letters from each of them. Almost unbelievable to me by the late 1980’s, when John had made it onto my bedroom wall.

In 1990, I went to a gig in Liverpool to mark John’s 50th birthday. His widow, Yoko Ono and his then 15 year old son, Sean, compered the show. During my career I’ve made plenty of documentaries about rock legends - Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton. They all have an element of tragedy, but this one was different. When I began work on this programme, I was acutely aware that yes, we were concentrating on John Lennon at 80, but with Sean involved, the story suddenly included a boy who had lost his Dad in the most awful circumstances.

I don’t mind saying I was more than a little apprehensive about working with John’s family. Fortunately I had absolutely no reason to be. Sean couldn’t have been more insightful, intelligent and, fortunately, equipped with a sharp sense of humour. Due to Covid restrictions, when we began work on this project, flying to meet him in New York was out of the question. We spent a lot of time on Zoom, chatting through ideas and working out the best way to approach what seemed like an impossible task. Soon it was suggested that Paul McCartney might get involved and then, could his big brother Julian be involved too?

Once we decided what to do, we approached Paul, Sean’s godfather Elton John and Julian. Would they even want to take part? We couldn’t ask them each the same questions and we couldn’t travel the same path as other programmes about Lennon had taken. Sean would take the lead and do the interviews, not me. I was acutely aware that as a child, he’d lost his father, not John Lennon, and I was terrified of pushing him over an emotional cliff. I don’t think any of the conversations were easy for him but he approached each one with a thoughtful and a natural curiosity.

We had many conversations about what he wanted to talk about, how he felt he could talk about his Dad’s musical life and the things he genuinely wanted to find out. Hearing Sean talk so openly with Paul, with his brother and with Elton was nothing short of utterly compelling. In their conversations, they brought John’s music to life again, speaking about John as someone in the present, not a lost classic. Even Sean discovered things he hadn’t known about before.

When I first became aware of John Lennon, his legend loomed large across the 80s. I just about remember my sister’s 7” single of Imagine, which was re-released after Lennon’s murder in December 1980, and I remember the nationwide shock of what had happened. But by the mid 1990’s, my generation suddenly, tragically, had one of our own to mourn, Kurt Cobain. As time marched on, more heroes fell and the death of Lennon was caught up in so many more talented losses so I was pleased to bring John’s legacy back to the fore by making this programme. Many legends are re-evaluated and maybe some of the things he did or said are now considered out of step in today’s political climate. But as he said in an interview for Rolling Stone magazine just days before he died, he never wanted to be a "dead hero". And as Sean says in the programme, when he was alive, John never stopped evolving and he never stopped updating his own opinions.

I don’t think I’ve ever worked on a programme that felt so terrifyingly important - I know from personal experience how strongly Beatles fans critique anything that mentions John’s name or feature his music. I hope what we’ve done is provide a unique perspective on John for his birthday, with new voices and new insights into who he was and how he lived. I wouldn’t want to re-write history, but what I did want to do was give Sean a chance to talk about his father on his own terms, with those who were so close to him.

John Lennon At 80 is produced by Listen and available on 成人论坛 Radio 2 on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October, from 9-10pm. Listen again on 成人论坛 Sounds where you can also hear the interviews in full.

Update on 成人论坛 interactive TV services Wed, 30 Sep 2020 09:00:00 +0000 /blogs/aboutthebbc/entries/60e6c823-46da-47c8-85ce-634f4be28480 /blogs/aboutthebbc/entries/60e6c823-46da-47c8-85ce-634f4be28480 Dan Taylor-Watt Dan Taylor-Watt

In November 2019, we communicated that we planned to remove the text and data element of the 成人论坛 red button service due to financial pressures and the significant technical effort and cost of retaining the service, which would come at the expense of investing in other services.

A number of individuals and organisations got in touch with us to voice concerns about the impact of this change.  In January, we published an update saying that we were suspending the planned closure in order to understand more about the possible impact the removal would have, particularly on the elderly and people with disabilities.

Since then, we have been in contact and had extensive dialogue with a wide range of representative groups to build on our existing research into what elements of the service are most used and valued by different groups.

We have listened to this feedback - and I’m pleased to let you know that we have found a way to keep the most valued text and data elements of the red button service.

This means you will continue to be able to access local, national and international news headlines and stories, main sport headlines and stories, sport fixtures and results, as well as weather forecasts.

To enable the continuation of the most valued text and data elements of the service, we are having to find ways to reduce cost and complexity elsewhere. This will mean we will be no longer be providing Lottery results (from November 2020) or English regional sport pages and individual sports’ headlines, besides football and those on the main sport pages (from mid-2021) via the red button. National sport indexes (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) will be retained - as will all sport fixtures and results.   Due to cost implications, we will not be updating the news and sport element of the service throughout the night – however, this will be refreshed each morning and then throughout the day to ensure you are up-to-date.

As we have previously stated, red button video streams for the likes of Wimbledon or Glastonbury won’t be affected by this change.

For people using the internet-based version of our red button service, we will be consolidating our internet-connected TVs apps, retiring the 成人论坛 News and 成人论坛 Sport connected TV apps before the end of the year as well as the lottery and weather pages on connected TVs. 成人论坛 iPlayer will become the home of much of the video content that is currently available on the 成人论坛 Sport and 成人论坛 News TV apps and the traditional text and data offer will remain accessible on the majority of internet-connected televisions via the ‘Text’ button on the remote control.

I would like to thank everyone who has got in touch to let us know what they value about the red button text service - and hope you continue enjoying using it.
