I’m Jennifer Richardson and I’m a Senior Product Manager in ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Design & Engineering based in Salford. I’m the Product Manager for ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Red Button+ and the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Sport and ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ News apps on connected TV.

In close collaboration with product and editorial teams from ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Sport, ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Live and ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ News – and along with colleagues in Engineering and User Experience & Design, we’ve reimagined the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳’s connected TV experience ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, relaunching our News, Sport and, most recently, Red Button+ products.

We’ve also launched an enhanced experience for all live coverage of our major sporting, cultural and music events, including the Olympic Games.

The Rio Olympic Games presents a key opportunity to provide our audience with the best possible experience on their connected TV; we want our audience to feel like they’re at the event and never miss a moment of the action.

When we set out to rethink Red Button+, our goal was to provide frictionless access from ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ television channels to compelling content from ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ iPlayer, Sport and News and more.

We’ve done this by improving the navigation between all of our ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ TV apps – and we’ve given ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ News and Sport a makeover, unifying design and interaction patterns so that users of ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ iPlayer will discover a familiar pattern when browsing, watching or reading content across all ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ products.

During the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳’s Olympic coverage on television, ‘pressing red’ on your connected TV will instantly connect you with up to 24 HD streams of live coverage from ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Sport, so nobody needs to miss a moment of the action that they want to watch.

We’ve made it easy to navigate to other sports, restart coverage if the start of an event has been missed, get the latest highlights, see what action’s coming up and catch up on any medal moments from previous days.

Plus it’s now even easier to access ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ iPlayer from a connected TV by ‘pressing red’, giving our audience a quick way to find the programmes they want to watch, or quickly restart the programme they are currently watching.

An innovative engineering solution underpins this change to our audience-facing products, meaning all our connected TV apps now share a common code-base, known internally as TAP (TV Application Platform). This approach eases the burden on support teams, enables faster product innovation and helps us to make our content available on more devices more easily - all through practical adoption of platform-thinking.

Jennifer Richardson is Senior Product Manager in ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Design & Engineering.

Following our award-winning coverage of London 2012, which saw over 90% of the UK population watch the Olympics on the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳, we will again be at the heart of the world’s biggest sporting spectacle, delivering blanket coverage from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games across TV, radio and online.

On TV, there will be over 550 hours of coverage from Rio on ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ One and ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Four.  We’re expanding the hours of ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Four across all platforms so that it starts from 1pm in the afternoon and runs through to 2am, offering live coverage of key events in Rio.

We’ll also be delivering many more hours of content across our digital and interactive platforms on web, mobile, connected TV and on Red Button+. A blog on our Red Button+ offering will be available in the next few days.

Eight streams on broadcast Red Button and ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ iPlayer

On the broadcast red button, viewers on cable and satellite platforms will be able to access eight scheduled streams curating all the key sports and highlights throughout the Olympic period – viewers on these platforms will also have the choice of watching the streams in high definition.

Note: where both SD and HD versions are carried, Sky and Freesat make the HD versions available on the lower EPG numbers in the above table.

Our broadcast offer on Freeview and YouView will be slightly different owing to long-standing broadcast capacity constraints. To offer as a wide a range of services as we can to as many viewers as possible, we’ve leased some extra capacity – though unfortunately not every part of the country can receive these signals. In addition, if you are within coverage, you’ll also need to be watching on a Freeview HD, Freeview Play or a YouView device (as a quick check, if you can watch CBeebies HD at EPG 124 then you should be good to go). If that’s the case, you will receive all the extra eight streams in standard definition. If you’re out of coverage, you may still be able to get live coverage of all the events through our Red Button+ offer, on which more details later in this article.

Freeview SD devices will get two part-time services for the Olympics period on the Red Button: ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ RB 0 starting at 7pm and ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ RB 1, which is normally a full 24/7 service but which will be starting at 9pm during the Olympics in order to accommodate C³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ and the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Four extended broadcast hours.

** ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ RB 1 is available in two formats on Freeview: all viewers will get the part-time service on EPG 601, whilst Freeview HD viewers only (and specifically, as mentioned above, those able to receive CBeebies HD at 124) will also be able to access a full-time service on EPG 608.

The same eight curated streams will also be available on ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ iPlayer along with live streaming of ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ One and ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Four, so you can keep up with our live Olympics coverage on the go, or catch up on your favourite events when you want.

Comprehensive coverage from ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Sport online, on connected TV and on Red Button+

Building on our online offer for London 2012, you’ll be able to access 24 live HD streams on web, mobile and on connected TV for the Rio Olympic Games, providing over 2,500 hours of live Olympics coverage.

These streams will be available from , through the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Sport apps for and via Red Button+ (our internet-connected Red Button service) and the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Sport App on and media streaming devices:

  • 24 live HD video streams
  • Highlights clips and replays of those not-to-be-missed moments [this is the case on connected TV and via Red Button]
  • Intuitive, quick access to live, coming up and catch up
  • Additional text commentary, audience interaction via ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Sport’s live coverage on mobile, tablet or PC
  • Olympics Playlist, downloadable to catch up every morning on the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ iPlayer
  • On web and mobile, “My Sport” will allow Olympics fans to personalise their Rio 2016 experience by following the sports you like most, signing up for the latest news alerts, setting event reminders and sharing your favourite moments across the social media platforms
  • And on our own social media pages, ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Sport will give you the chance to get even closer to the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳’s coverage, presenters and special guests with behind-the-scenes coverage

Changes to some of our HD channels on Freeview HD/YouView

Three of our HD channels (C³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ HD, CBeebies HD and ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Four HD) will be moving broadcast capacity on Freeview from 27th July until shortly after the Olympic Games ends, in order to allow us to extend ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Four HD’s hours to start from 1pm. ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Four will be available to all Freeview HD for the duration of the Olympic Games.

The interim broadcast capacity for C³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ HD will have less coverage in the UK than the existing capacity. As a result, some viewers will find they’ve lost C³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ HD over the Olympics Games period – as a check if currently you’re unable to see either CBeebies HD or ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Four HD, then unfortunately you will be losing reception of C³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ HD temporarily – however, normal service for C³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ HD will resume after 23rd August and you will still receive the SD version throughout. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes. For those viewers that are able to continue receiving C³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ HD during the Rio 2016 period, it will be temporarily moving to LCN 97 on Freeview and YouView.

For unavoidable technical reasons, on the three HD channels that are moving any series links that have been set will not record – so viewers should reset their recordings to the SD version of those channels in order to maintain continued recordings during the Olympic Games.

After the Olympics period, we’ll be returning things back to normal – whilst CBeebies HD and ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Four HD will also be moving to a different slot of broadcast capacity from where they are now, and so may require a retune, for the majority there should be no material impact from the current Freeview reception of these channels. See the Freeview paragraph below on retuning your TV or box to get the latest updates.

How to get our additional streams on your TV

  • If you have  or  your receiver may well pick up the changes automatically but if not you will need to retune;  gives advice on how to do this. (If you’re using a Freeview SD receiver, you should already be able to access our Red Button SD streams on channels 600 and 601 but if for some reason you don’t then again a retune should solve this for you.) Full instructions can be found in the manual for your digital TV or box. Further help with retuning can be found by calling the Freeview Advice Line on 0345 6505050.
  • If you have , you should not have to do anything. If you do have a problem receiving any of our channels, you can try turning your Sky set-top box off at the mains, waiting 30 seconds and turning it back on again. If that doesn’t resolve your problem you can find more help at .
  • If you have the new streams should appear automatically. If you do have a problem receiving any of our channels, you can find more help at . For Virgin TiVo users the broadcast Red Button streams will be listed in the 560s in the guide – alternatively, pressing red when you’re watching on one of our TV channels will take you to the additional coverage and expanded offer on our ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Red Button+ service.
  • If you have and you do not pick up the new channels automatically, you may need to put your digital box or TV into standby for 30 seconds and then switch it back on again. If the channels are still unavailable then carry out a Freesat channel retune. Full instructions can be found in the manual for your digital TV or box. Further help with retuning can be found at or by calling the Freesat customer support team on 08450 990 990. For those that need it, full DSAT transponder information can be found on our .
  • Red Button+ will work on the majority of connected TVs and Set Top Boxes (STBs) produced after 2012, including YouView and Virgin TiVo, providing direct access to ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Sport’s Rio 2016 coverage. You can find more details about Red Button+ and some of the devices that support it .

You can also access the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Sport app on a range of media streaming devices, including Amazon Fire TV and Sony Playstations. Find out more about all the devices .

Are you ready for a summer of sport? Thu, 23 Jun 2016 14:39:00 +0000 /blogs/aboutthebbc/entries/7c56a24d-049d-4413-9567-8bdede5cdaee /blogs/aboutthebbc/entries/7c56a24d-049d-4413-9567-8bdede5cdaee Kieran Clifton Kieran Clifton

With a packed line-up of world-class sport this summer from France, SW19 and Brazil plus a return to Worthy Farm, you’ll be delighted to know that we’re broadcasting a number of extra Red Button streams throughout the Summer to provide additional coverage of all the big events: from Euros 2016 to , from to all the way on the other side of the world with the . There’ll be more details on our Red Button Olympics coverage and services later in the year in another article similar to this one.

For the Euros, Glastonbury and Wimbledon, depending on the platform and the event, we will broadcast a number of extra streams on our standard Red Button and on some platforms, we’re also able to offer high-definition content – where those broadcast streams are listed on the EPG then you’ll be able to set recordings. Plus, there’s even more coverage available on your TV screen if you can access our internet-powered . And, as always, all the coverage offered in Red Button+ will also be available on the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Music app, in the case of Glastonbury, and our ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Sport app, in the case of the Euros and Wimbledon, and on bbc.co.uk on PCs, mobiles and tablets.

The purpose of this blog is to let you know what we’re doing on each platform for each event and to explain what you will need to do in order to access the extra coverage.

10 June – 10 July : the UEFA 2016 European Championship on the Red Button

The Euros are now well underway and for the most part, the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳’s Euros 2016 football coverage will feature on either ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ One and/or ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Four, and their high definition counterparts.

However, where TV schedule clashes don’t allow coverage on our main network channels, you’ll find some matches exclusively on our broadcast red button streams. In addition, there’ll be repeats of matches throughout the tournament and highlights packages of all the action.

On the cable and satellite platforms, we’ll also have a simulcast of ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ RB 1 in HD. Unfortunately, we don’t have access to enough capacity to be able to offer ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ RB 1 in HD via broadcast and on the EPG to Freeview HD and YouView users but matches in HD will be accessible via the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Sport app if your TV or set-top box is internet-connected and can access Red Button+.

June 24 – 26 : Glastonbury on the Red Button

Marking the 20th year of ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ television coverage of the festival, later this month there’ll be 25 hours of TV of the world-renowned Glastonbury festival across our main network services (³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Two and Four, plus their HD counterparts). You can find more details about all the acts on TV .

However, we know that for some of you that’s just not enough music so additionally, during the festival, there will be up to three broadcast red button streams and one of those streams will be simulcast in HD, all depending on how you receive your TV. Our three broadcast red button streams are all scheduled services covering six of Glastonbury’s stages (namely Pyramid, Other, John Peel, West Holts, The Park and ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Introducing).  Unlike the live streams on the website and our internet-powered Red Button+ service, our standard red button service has recorded performances from those six stages, but there’s no presenters, just pure music. A table of what’s available on each platform and on which EPG numbers is shown below.

Unfortunately, as for the Euros coverage and owing to capacity restrictions, we’re unable to offer more than the one existing Red Button stream to DTT viewers.

Our Red Button+ app is supported by Virgin TiVo and YouView devices as well as a growing range of smart TVs once they’ve been connected to the internet. You can find out if your TV set can get our Red Button+ service .

At bbc.co.uk/music, the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Glastonbury website and ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ iPlayer via PCs, tablets and smartphones, you’ll also be able to access the same live streams of the six stages, across the weekend. There will also be around 120 performances available on demand at  and ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ iPlayer so you’ve no need to worry about timetable clashes for your favourite acts.

And finally, for your fullest Glasto hit, don’t forget our recently-launched ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Music app, available on mobiles and tablets.  Go in now, highlight your favourite acts and come back during or after the festival to catch all their appearances as recorded for ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Glastonbury.

On our standard broadcast Red Button service on satellite and cable platforms you’ll find a total of six red button streams in SD plus one of which will be simulcast in HD.

As is the case with the Euros/Glastonbury events, unfortunately there’s not enough capacity for us to be able to offer additional streams to all Freeview viewers but if you’ve got access to our Red Button+ app on your TV then see further below for more details …
