Back In The UK innit!
Hello Peeps,
Touched down from Delhi late yesterday after 3 and half weeks in India.
On the music side it was very interesting. After 3 years of Brit-Asian artists and albums releasing out there, something's definitely seeped through into Bollywood. Nearly all the new movie tracks by year end had what my ear can define as a vague British sound. Not that anyone there admitted it. Bollywood devours everything in it's path and co-opts like a monster but I could definitely hear it. The largest films by year end were (in ticket sales and in popular opinion) Rang De Basanti, Omkara, Lage Raho MunnaBhai and Don. All of them pointing towards an interesting future for Bollywood, all for different reasons.RDBasanti is a true tipping point in Indo cinema. Its radical, political, leftfield as well as mainstream. Many people are saying it's the first film to capture 21st Century Indian youth in all its glory. Omkara - because it borrows from Shakespeare's 'Othello' but does so with respect and has a 'gritty mainstream' feel as opposed to being on the sidelines. LR MunnaBhai - it's a comedy that anyone in the world will find funny whilst re-launching the concept of Ghandi'ism for an India that's totally forgotten it. And finally Don - the one film I didn't enjoy that much - for just being up there in cinematography terms with the best of Hollywood.
Politically it was all about the 'Power of the Media' during '06 (did they have too much?) after discovering what investigative journalism was all about. Nearly every story had either hidden camera or camera phone footage associated with it. Also, compared to 10 or 20 years ago, it's interesting how you now hear voices you wouldn't have heard before. Indians (even the poorest) don't see a TV camera as something to shy away from - they shove their faces in front of it and happily air their grievances, even if no one's listening! Hopefully, the power of the Cathode Ray Nipple may in some way change the unequal balance of voices in India.
The gigs I played were again a mixed bag. I was out there during the release of Friction Re-Loaded - a repackaged Friction 1 & 2 with an extra 7 songs and a couple of remixes. I played all over the country but I must give a special mention to Area 51 in Pune which is a large concrete nightclub built as an exact replica of a circular UFO! Once inside, you feel like the club's spinning, so by 2am I thought we were taking off! I also have to big up Renaissance in Powai (Mumbai) where I played on New Years eve. The (nasal) legend that is Himesh Reshammiya performed as did Pakistani band - Strings. I also bumped into John Abrahams (easy girls!) at Mumbai airport and have to say he's a down to earth sort of Geezer, innit!
Biggest Buzz: Walking into Planet M in Chandigarh with my Massi (aunty) and seeing my 3rd No.1 album in as many years. My Massi proceeded to hyperventilate, then cry with joy so we had to get out ASAP!
Worst Buzz: Realising (after years of not seeing it) that Asian people are some of the most conformist people on earth. British, Canadian, US or India - no matter how trendy etc they are - the average Asian is still deep down a full on conformist.
Food Buzz: I had Butter Chicken everywhere I went and Delhi is surprisingly overtaking the Punjab in terms of quality. Just don't tell the Food Fundoo's!
Female Buzz: Kareena Kapoor in Don trying to do the 'sexy thang' with S. R. Khan. Everyone out there called her an overweight bumbling s***. I beg to differ. The gyall's sexuality is fo' real!
Male Buzz: Abhishek Bachchan, slowly but surely, turning into a major superstar.
Music Buzz: I'm saving it for tonight's Friction show which will be India focused as I'll be playing a lot more than just Bollywood. Plus, tonight's 3 play on Bobby Friction & Nihal is special too so make sure you tune in or listen back via the 成人论坛 Radio Player.
Bobby Friction.
ps. The reason Shilpa Shetty said 'yes' to Celebrity Big Brother is because Big Boss (The Indian Big Brother) is full of good looking housemates as is in it's the first series in India - all very tame and Totally Cool Yaar! There's none of the perverse production decisions going on as per Big Bro UK and neither did she know that Jade Goody's mum would be…
