Glasto 2007 - Mud Masala Mayhem
Greetings from the Dance Village East backstage here at Glastonbury, with the echo of the Marley brothers performing 'Exodus' ringing in my ears and giving me a soothing start to Sunday after a manic Saturday night set to a soundtrack set by Annie Mac and .
There may have been only a small a few Pilton Punjabi's (including four sardars selling tumbis and sitars from a stall) and British-Asians in attendance but the impact of Asian artists here this year has been significant.
The Roots Stage backstage on Friday night was just amazing. I remember at one point looking at the crowd gathered in front of our Asian Network Station Wagon and thinking how we had brought together almost every key figure in progressive Indian and British-Asian music together.
Tigerstyle, Diamond, Karsh Kale, Midival Punditz, ADF, Riz MC, Bandish Projekt and even emerging artists like Randolph of Pentagram and Shaair were all backstage with us.
Every act on our Asian Network Roots Stage were excellent in their own way, but there were two unexpected highlights for me.
The first surprise was Catch 22. Now I have seen this Reading-based crew perform decent sets on several occasions, but this time they really stepped up and grabbed the Roots arena by the scruff of the neck and took it to another level.
Producer Prash has managed to combine Asian and Black music influences to produce some of the most exciting British music in ages. Their cross-cultural sound reminds me of how fresh The Specials were in the 80's.
The second surprise was ADF Sound System. There was no Specs or the usual MC's, but Pandit on the decks and three new MC's to liven up the place.
They tore it up, and were the first to really bring Bhangra to the audience. Imagine 'Main Hogiya Sharabi' moving thousands of Glasto festival goers.
Bandish Projekt pushed the creativity further than every before. Watch me speak to these Electronic Ambassadors from Ahmedabad right here.
Tigerstyle were the highlight on the 成人论坛 Introducing Stage. Watch their set right here.
And beyond AN there were two other Asian musical happenings from Artists to watch-out for:
Bat For Lashes made a big impact.
Goldspot (named after the Indian soft drink) also opened up proceedings from The Queens Head on Friday.
Shame that MIA cancelled on the Friday. Watch this space for news on a special live performance soon.
And finally one thing that HAS to be seen- Sonia Deol interviewing Fatboy Slim!
It's official. Asian Network took British-Asian music to a new level at Glastonbury and Sonia Deol is a Glastonbury virgin no more.

Goldspot at Glastonbury. Hottest new band and they have an asian singer, Siddhartha. And I think they will be the first band to have an Asian American frontman that becomes one of the biggest bands in the world.
