I’m delighted to announce that ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ News app for Android is now available for large tablet devices. The app is available to download .

³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Worldwide will soon be launching an international version of the app for audiences around the world.

This follows the success of the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ News app for Android smartphones, which has been downloaded more than three million times globally since launching last yearÌýÌý

This latest version, developed by our in-house team, gives an optimised experience for larger tablets – on devices running Android’s Honeycomb 3.0 operating system and above. (Smaller 7.1-inch tablets will continue to receive the smartphone app).

It offers a simple way of navigating through the key news sections in both landscape and portrait mode.

You can personalise these to suit your interests; we’ve made it easy to share stories and the app also provides On Demand video within stories, in both 3G and wi-fi.

We’ll be offering theÌýNews Channel live in a later release. We’re also working on homescreen widgets.

Growing numbers of people are accessing ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ News on mobiles and tablets. In an average week, the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ News sites and apps are visited by around 9.7m users worldwide on mobile and tablet devices. That represents about 26% of the total.

The ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ News product development team will be working on further mobile and tablet improvements over the coming year.

Thanks for your continued comments and star ratings. Please let us know what you think of the Android tablet app underneath this post, or via the .

    As usual, it looks great.

I'm a Windows Phone user, so I'm hoping that it will be next on your to-do list. Do you plan on making a ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ News and ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ iPlayer app for it?

Why does the version of the app for 7inch tablets not work in landscape mode?
If it can display OK on a 3.5inch screen in portrait, it can certainly display properly on a 7inch screen in landscape.

"³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Worldwide will soon be launching an international version of the app for audiences around the world."

perfect, just in time for the worldwide audience ot witness the decline of the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳'s journalistic standards and integrity? or to help widen the reach of the increasingly blatant propaganda?
    who knows, 'congratulations', I guess.

I'm looking forward to the new tablet app. I also hope that one day the legacy of Tony Blair, Rupert Murdoch and Conrad Black will be undone and the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ will return to its original intention to make its content archive available online to people everywhere...and not just in the UK. I well remember the day when Tony Blair caved in to the two Evil Lords of the Media (Murdoch and Black) and restricted access to the UK only. Their garbage - arguably dishonest - content would not be able to compete with free quality content from the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳.

@Captn Black: The smartphone app only works in portrait. It surely wouldn't be difficult to make it switch to landscape when required - how about it ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Apps team?

Please make sure your android apps are available to your license fee payers in the Channel Islands also. This app is not showing up in the market on my Asus Tranformer tablet, and the web market indicates that is because 'This item cannot be installed in your device's country'. The iPlayer app is also difficult to get hold of here.

I don't understand why you should limit this to only uk? I am not in the UK, but I always read the news in English and about the entire world, if I want local news then I go to one of my news papers.

I cant wait for the new Tablet as my phone is android and love Apps, especially free one. I am going to download my free copy now for my phone. Cheers

Again looks great but I have a windows phone, looking forward to iplayer and news apps for it

I can't understand why you'd develop separate versions for UK and the rest of the world. What am I missing here?

  • Comment number 11.

when does the rest of the world get the tablet version? on a desktop globe you could cover the UK with your thumb...the entire rest of the world has to wait? (if you take offense to the thumb/UK remark, feel free to say something like "on a globe you couldn't cover one fat American with your thumb." Oh, wait, that would be the pot calling the kettle black now wouldn't it...Well, I did spell "Monkies" incorrectly, does that help? ;)

Thanks for everyone's comments. Regarding the question from fr about the Channel Islands - thanks for bringing this to my attention. Of course the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ apps should be available to licence fee payers in the Channel Islands. I have raised the issue with Google.

Some of you are asking for the app to be available outside the UK. ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Worldwide will soon be launching an international version of the app for audiences around the world.

Thanks for looking into it, if you need any further info let me know

Great news for the android users.

Got android tablet but no android market, please make this available via other appstores or via the bbc site.

Developed b 'Media Applications Technologies for the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳'... Is this actually an official ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ News app? ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ News for international audiences IS an official app, but it cannot be installed n the UK... how absurd is that?

This ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ News app just keeps getting worse and worse. It has an inept developer and faulty updates... several months ago an update caused all thumbnails to be blank - they are STILL blank, despite an update that was supposed to have fixed it. And recently, many stories have simply been replaced by an iPlayer, or just have a headline without any article.

So I cannot believe this is the official ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ New app... unless the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ has gone for ineptitude, shoddiness and downright laziness.

Kate, I think the developments for news consumption on mobile and tablet devices by the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ recently have been phenomenal. The user experience on my Android tablet is amazing - it's really changed the way I'll be interacting and obtaining news in the future. One note though that I would hope you would incorporate in the future, is better access to RSS feeds.. particularly via email (not all of us have access to the net 24/7 unfortunately). Otherwise, it seems the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ has hit the nail on the head in terms of .

Incidently, I do agree with the numerous comments above about the differentiation between the UK and World apps - I imagine the primary reason for this is sponsorship revenue for the non-UK app? ... still, I believe the design at least should be more consistent between the two.

Jusy upgraded my Samsung Gaxy S2 to the new Ice Cream Sandwich firmware and noticed that the "live" button on the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ news app has disappeared. Now have to go to main website and access it from there.

What is the best afffordable tablet with the bbc app

This comment was removed because the moderators found it broke the house rules. Explain.
