Five minutes with Jared Lawthom, current Trainee on our Journalism Trainee Scheme

Jared Lawthom

Journalism Trainee

So Jared, October marks a year since you first started the Journalism Trainee Scheme, can you remember much about your first week here?

The first week was really exciting. It was the first time I really felt like ‘this is it. I’m a journalist.’ It was mainly meet and greets, getting to know the other trainees and finding out how the year was going to work. It was all in London at New Broadcasting House and really exciting. Getting your 成人论坛 pass etc.

… And how did you know that Journalism was the career for you?

I went travelling to Eastern Europe in 2015, and the plight of the Syrian refugees in Europe had become the focus of the media attention. As a result I got involved in relief work with a charity in Austria. I was helping out making food and handing out clothes/water in this underground car park, which had about 1,000 refugees staying there. It was there that I saw a student journalist interviewing some of the refugees when the idea came to mind. It made me realise how important it was to get the stories I was hearing out there, and how that could make a difference in the way the world was viewing these refugees. So I came back worked hard to save up and went to do a Masters in Broadcast Journalism at the University of Sheffield.

You clearly worked very hard to get to this point, what has been your proudest moment or biggest achievement since being on the scheme?

Proudest moment was definitely getting on the scheme actually, but biggest achievement was reporting my own original story which was picked up by all outlets in Wales. I got to report the story for TV, Radio and Online. The story was picked up for two different slots on the 成人论坛 homepage. That was the first time I really got a sense of ‘I can do this.’ The story was about a trans man who faced some online scrutiny about his fundraising to have a double mastectomy. Since the story ran Elliot has almost reached his £4,000 target and it really got people talking. Even the Lib Dems shared it showing that you can even influence public policy with the right story, which is amazing to think and quite powerful.

That’s incredible, and let’s not forget your nomination for the Royal Television Society Award in the Postgraduate News Category earlier this year, Well Done! With all this hard work and great achievements, what have you learnt about yourself?

That I can do more than I thought. I never had myself down as much of a writer, but since starting the scheme I’ve had over 10 articles published on the website and at least 7 of those featured on the 成人论坛 homepage. I’ve also learned to be more confident. I realised that really everyone is still learning no matter who you are, so you are no different to someone who’s been in the job 20 years. Yes of course they understand that job better, but you could also end up bringing something different and teaching them something new.

Any words that immediately come to mind when you think about working for the 成人论坛?

Exciting – The potential in the company is massive. Beyond the scheme the opportunities are endless. You really can try your hand at different things, and the world really is your oyster.

And finally, tell us about any 成人论坛 programme that has you hooked this year?

I love ‘Nick Robinson’s Political Thinking’ podcast definitely hooked on that! Beyond Today is also making some really good stuff. Still loving Louis Theroux’s docs and desperate for more David Attenborough on screen soon! Blue Planet 3 please!
