Uefa's treatment of Dundee United was appalling

The Tannadice club were dealt with appallingly this week in Athens, and it falls to the top man in the to fight their corner.

Uefa treated United and their fans with contempt in procrastinating over where the Europa League play-off game against AEK would take place.

Six hundred United supporters, spending their own hard-earned cash to make the trip, arrived in Greece not knowing where the game would be played.

Uefa swore United to secrecy until around 6pm the day before the match, and in a surreal scenario, a grim-faced Dundee United chairman walked out of a meeting with Mr Been, the Uefa delegate, only to tell me that he had been told to tell me nothing.

Athens shambles may play in Dundee United's favour

Temperatures are not the only thing soaring in Athens.

The Dundee United chairman's temper is also at boiling point.

Stephen Thompson has so far resisted the temptation to have a blast at AEK Athens and Uefa over the shambles surrounding United's 106th European appearance.

However, regardless of tonight's result he seems set to fill the airwaves and newspaper columns in the coming days as he seethes with anger over the .

Tonight's match at the Karaiskaki stadium, home of AEK's bitter rivals Olympiakos, will kick off at 9pm Greek time in sweltering heat.

The venue was only confirmed late yesterday afternoon after AEK had failed to find another ground. Their own home at the Olympic stadium having been ruled out because of pitch problems, and their preferred option, the Nea Smyrni stadium being vandalised.

Football is alive and kicking beyond the SPL

We can't prove there's life beyond earth, but there is most certainly vibrant, intelligent and passionate life beyond the Scottish Premier League.

Much as I love watching Scotland's top flight, there is a special quality about football outside of the SPL which is driven by a sense of belonging and community.

Starting on Wednesday evening and for the rest of the season I'll be back presenting "Beyond the SPL" on Radio Scotland, featuring, Highland League, East of Scotland, Juniors, youth and women's football, as well as your five-a-side team if you've a tale worth telling.
