Behind the scenes with British Paras fresh back from Afghanistan; assessing the efficacy of crime and punishment in the UK; the case of a man who鈥檚 admitted to a series of terror plots; and the startling claim that a British lawyer was behind suicides at Guantanamo Bay.

Dear Newsnight
I find it very strange that your correspondent Mark Urban downplayed the signifcance of your lead story tonight. Then Doug henderson comes on and one would imagine he would appreciate that the head of the army has stuck his neck out to protect his troops and call for us to come out of Iraq, but instead Mr Henderson used the interview to question his right to do so. Its a major story but I really do not understand the comments from Mark Urban and Doug Henderson tonight
best wishes

The PM is NOT the Head of the Armed Services Her Majesty the Queen is!! Get a grip of your basic facts; every serviceman/woman swears an oath of loyalty to the crown not the Legislature.

Sir Richard Dannatt deserves credit for giving his honest opinion. But will the government now remove him from his postition?

Dear Newsnight,
Finally - Newsnight reported on our Armed Forces properly. (Alistair Leathead only)
Considering the hard work, sacrifice,
and life threatening operations our troops endure, I'm disgusted at the lack of reports like Alistairs, that are made for the programme.
As a public service broadcaster it's your job to inform people about what's going on. It's disgraceful you don't go to great lengths, to make sure people are aware of the great difficulties are Armed Forces face.
Sort your priorities out!
The class system in England, etc.. is less important!!! (BORING)
PS Look forward to a decent report from Iraq next. Send Alistair!

鈥淒irty Bomb鈥 鈥 Dhiren Barot
I am very sad tonight because of the current situation within Britain. When you look at the fact that 鈥淒hiren Barot鈥 stood up in court and plead 鈥済uilty鈥 in plotting to use a dirty bomb in Britain a country that welcome he and his family when they arrived from Kenya you have to say to your self that we are now living amongst the enemy within.
A sad fact that we could get blown up at anytime because of the twisted believe of a group of people who believe that they are SUPERIOR to every one else. If that was the case why is it that their country of origin has to rely on the west to prop them up.
Furthermore, if the RADICALS (that small minority) around us feels that way about Britain and British people why do they not just pack up and leave Britain instead of spreading their hate rid and using the welfare system.

Last nights news that our new top brass 4 star General had given an unofficial personal statement to the Daily Mail has certainly shocked the public & establishment... BUT ..many of us are saying the same...it's the deliverance that's unusual!
The cynic in me says , was it unexpected? or maybe planned? .The news of late has certainly seen a lot of supposedly unofficial feedback from our fighting services, we had a 3 star General appearing to argue with Paxman over released /leaked docs' from the Forces Think Tank.. now we have this 4 star General apparently rolling out his thoughts which are/have been, in direct conflict with government policies on Iraq.!...anyway, serving Generals do not give lengthy interviews with the press/media..protocol insists they keep silent on disagreements...wouldn't his intentions have leaked out anyway... before going to print.!!
It would be naive to suppose Blair & Co are not looking for an exit strategy that would suit us, the USA & others.. kick started here, would be great news be for us & a bonus for BLAIR!
Those (Prezza) Tectonic plates have certainly moved again today...we must wait & how the government reacts?

RE: General Sir Richard Dannatt in the Daily Mail and Defence Academy's "research notes"
It does not look like General Sir Richard Dannatt made his statements unintentionally, as Michael Portillo pondered last night on 'This Week'.[1] Having read the online articles in the Daily Mail[2a]+[2b] I think it would be useful to publish the integral version of the interview. I am not sure that the articles are precise enough to differentiate the General's opinions from the DM's headlines. For instance, I find his views on Christian values quite perplexing: does he really want the reader to believe that the army defends Christian values? His reaction in the second article to the journalist's question of how this affects Muslim recruits is alarmingly dismissive.
More importantly, however, it would be interesting to hear from the MoD/Defence Academy how the General's statements lie with the views expressed in the DA's "research notes"[3a]+[3b], which were downplayed so vociferously and with such impudence:
(i) Do the DA and the MoD maintain that these "research notes" are just the "jottings" of a "middle-ranking officer, not a senior official" or indeed the "raw research notes" of a "researcher at an academic institution"?[3c]
(ii) Do the DA and the MoD maintain that views such as those quoted from the leaked document are merely "primary research"?
(iii) When the General states that "Honesty is what it is about" and that "We have got to speak the truth", why did the MoD/DA insist that publishing the leaked DA document was "irresponsible"?
(iv) Does the MoD/DA think that the opinions expressed by the General are irresponsible? Is the Daily Mail irresponsible for printing these?
(v) Has the General hereby rendered the views expressed in the DA's document (in particular those concerning the radicalisation of Muslims worldwide due to the war in Iraq) official?
(vi) How do the views of the General relate to the views expressed in the DA's research notes? Do the views, expressed by the General and reflected in the DA's "research notes", represent an overall consensus in the Military community?
Could Messrs Barron, Esler &co. ask them, if they get the opportunity?
