I read Notes on a Scandal eons ago and having only read/heard reviews of the film have been racking my brains for the apparently graphic lesbian sex scenes. Listening to the programme tonight I now know why I can't bring them to mind! Dench's character (forgot name) struck me as being a woman who was intensely uneasy with her sexual leanings and it was one of the things that added depth to the psychological nuances of the novel. Having this unspoken taboo in the background made for an infinitely more interesting dynamic in terms of whispered comments and chatty colleagues.

Why is this shown on the national network when it's become increasingly a London review programme. Please could those of us living outside the south-east have our own Arts programme?

I feel compelled to write to the bbc aftewr watching tonight's newsnight review. The quality of the panel was poor. Martha Kearney was rubbish in her delivery and in her questioning. She continues to be a weak link in the newsnight schedule. Her questioning of panel members tonight was piss poor and unfortunatley the responses from the panel were equally poor. Why not have an artist ( or two ) on the panel so that Art Issues migght be seriously disscussed?. Yes it is good to have authors and curators and the like on the box discussing current happenings but I notice a distinct lack of practicing artists as invited contributors on to the panel. If you truely wish to make a programme for and by cultural and artistic practitioners then it would be wise to drop the eye candy, as witnessed tonight by choice of panel. Why do you think it necessary to include a thirty something attractive woman on the panel who, as the programme bore out, had very little of interest or substance to say and ended up looking like the token "happening" woman, awkward and out of her depth. Aren't there plenty of women who would give their eye teeth to appear on Newsnight, women who maybe do not fit the visual norms of current B.B.C. requirements, women who actually have an interesting point of view, who have seen more than one exhibition, who are not only concerned with how they look on camera, who are informed beyond the Sunday Newspapers about exhibitions and current artistic practice. Why don't you have practicing visual artists as panel members? As a visual artist myself I find it incredible that week after week you provide literary and cultural commentators yet fail to include visual artists on the panel. How come?Don't you have plenty opportunity to access visual artists??
The Friday Night Review Show is the only credible arts programme on t.v.
Please work harder at employing credible panels guests. No more attractive women who still have very little to say; Do not pay homage to woman....she is a very powerful tool....use her wiseley. Drop Marhta Kearney....she is poor. A weak representation of the intellect of woman.Keep up the work....hopefully you will get there. x
