An excellent edition. The panel were engaging, didn't talk over each other. There were no non-entities like Julie Myserson or Paul Morley, everyone had an informed opinion. Especially liked Sarah and Johann who are always great value. Also Martha is much better than Kirsty at making sure the panel don't just yell oevr each other.

Stayed up to find out what the panel thought of Norman Mailer's new novel and fell asleep around 11.20 and woke with a jolt when the cricket came on. I could watch it on the website but could anyone give me a brief summary of what the panel thought?

Overall the panel seemed to be pretty unimpressed with Mailer, although Rosie liked it and Sarah said it had 'flashes of brilliance' but she didn't seem to like it much either. Johann completely slated it, although surely he was being a bit glib, just going for laughs when he said that Mailer writes like Michael Crichton?! Was it really that bad? -- I thought Sarah was going to respond to that but time wasn't on her side. As she lectures on American Literature, I would like to know more about what she thought of the Mailer... can't remember what Aaronovitch said. I think he didn't like it either.
