Coincidentally have spent most of this afternoon trying to organise a holiday for Teenage Daughter and me (bonding, don't y'know), only to discover we still have the passport renewal form and photos sitting in the to-do pile,eeeek. How fast do they issue renewals these days, anyone know??

    You can get a fastish service by taking to post office and paying some extra for them to check the forms first and speeding them off, saving a week if I remember correctly.

    re passports, it depends how much you want them, really. A few years ago I had to renew my passport. Now, I travel a fair amount for work into Europe (one of the reasons that Fearless Fred is also Single Fred, but enough about that...). If you need a passport urgently (i.e. less than 1 week) you can travel to the local passport office and get it done that day. If you've got a couple of weeks' grace, you can visit the office, but for a bit less dosh, get your passport in under a fortnight (I did this option and had the new one three days later via registered post). You're also lucky in that you're outside the busy window of april to june/july, when there's usually a rush on, so you should be able to get an appointment at the local office in a matter of days...
