Kirsty
The delightful Kirsty Young takes over Desert Island Discs on Sunday. She gives an interview this morning to Media Guardian in which I'm not mentioned but pretty much implied throughout. We did work together briefly at ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Radio Scotland. It was around the time she was being offered a big television deal to lure her from the radio. She has of course been a huge success on the telly, and someone, years ago clearly identified that talent.
One morning in the studio Kirsty asked for my advice. I said not to touch the telly work, she'd do far better on the radio. Wise woman that she is, she did the opposite.
In that case Eddie, please offer me your sound careers advice. According to my parents I have always been contrary, so it should do just fine.
You could share your 'Desert Island Discs' with us here on the blog, you know?
You're up early!
It's official (but Confidential and Classified). Iraq war fosters terrorism.
Another setback for the poodle who has forgotten the correct posture when addressing a Shrub.
Yours Aye,
ed
But what would Eddies' (or anyone elses') luxury item be? Knowing people round here it would be something like chocolate or a named duvet!
Mmmm Chololate Duvet!
Doh!!
Fearless Fred (3): If the last few weeks of emails and blogs are anything to go by, can we assume that Eddie's luxury would be a window to watch out of, so that he can see the world go by.
Lissa, Eddie's window clearly gives a great view. Would it be possible for you to rig up a web-cam so that we can all watch the world go by outside the office?
A luxury item?
That would have to be my book on Fly Fishing.
SB7
(Maybe I should stop with the SB, as almost everyone else has.)
Can you fish for flies, JR (6), and by the way who did shoot you?
Alternatively,
Lissa,
Can you close the blinds next to Eddie's desk. The outside world is destracting him from work.
I thought a new presenter of DID was the last guest of the previous one, or did I dream that up (last change was a long time ago)
I have a feeling I'm going to have a family surprise today...just not in the mood for it.
John W re 8, I think you're channelling memories of Blue Peter as it used to be, when the only hint that someone was a new presenter would be that they took part in the last item of the show, and joined in with saying goodbye with the rest of the team. Not like it is now (according to my niece) where they're told upfront that there's a new presenter joining. Where's the fun in that??
SB9
that's awful Jimbo.
I mean.... its not like I haven't said something probably offensive here in the past but.... you weren't even being funny!?! not even a gag!?
I mean.... oh... s*d it, i'm going back to work.
With you whisht!
Jimbo, were you never told: If you can't say something nice, stay off the PM blog!
Harumph!
Best Wishes
Good thing you ignored the career advisor's advice and didn't become a career advisor.
JR (6ish),
Did you know that there is a stained glass window in Winchester Catherdal commemorating Izaak Walton, author of The Compleat Angler?
did I miss something? I can't see anything by a Jimbo - mind you I can't see my previous post either, but mine wasn't horrible, honest.
Ooh! Has a complaint been made re Jimbo? His post has thankfully disappeared:o)
btw, 'bot is back again...
yeah - but that bot is at least polite.
btw I didn't put a complaint in as I had a bizarre thought of not wanting to say something "behind someone's back" (is it weird that we use 'real-world' habits online..?)
no ill will to the guy - its just it wasn't funny and simply rude, but anyone can make an error of tone, so i hope he comes back.
Whisht - 17 - Now that is interesting - he must have been moderated, because I saw him earlier but didn't have time to join in with your approbriation (did I just make that up - sauvignon blanc, car passed its MOT test!), now Jimbo has gone. Perhaps he thought he was being amusing and just got it wrong... it happens.
I saw the 'bot, what's the score?
FF - 9 - the funny thing is that this of yours was there and then disappeared, and now is back, who would complain about that?? My luxury would be a never-ending bag of chocolate raisins :o)
Quiet day today, I hope Ap got away ok?
SB18 (The disappearing posts were part of what started us on the SB business)
Hey whisht:)
Personally, I think it's just common curtesy to treat people here as you would treat them if you met them face to face. Plus, it helps to seperates blog pots from text message speak:)
It was fairly obnoxious, without any attempt at wit or humour. I think, however, that the rest of us lurkers will mange to keep this as a haven of civility, wit, and stupidity:p
An FF who's half way through his third glass of merlot this evening....
Oh FF dear boy - methinks the merlot is affecting your spelling! Lol! Don't worry, I'm not organising you, heaven forfend.
SB19
sb21
Well, in my mitigation, the merlot plus the fact that i'm still dealing with emails for work should allow me some slack with the spelling:) If not, I'm sure I can rely on you, V (as well as Appy, Anne, Annasee and the rest) to keep me on my toes!
Get on those toes, man!
SB22
P.S. Can someone hint at what Jimbo was referencing, as I missed his post.
hey Valery, you're the only other person I have ever encountered who uses the expression 'heaven forfend'. where DID we pick it up from?
sb 24
Dr. H.
It was the old "ideal face for radio gag" but not too well presented. For the record, I think it was inaccurate, and the voice is right up there with Seagreen and Mariella Frostrup, too.
I'd like to think that Jimbo had it erased.
Anne/Valery
We need to form a new club - Heaven Forfend is one of my pet phrases as well (normally when I'm trying to avoid swearing)
What a shame that Jimbo's post has gone.
Glad my response returned though - quite pleased with that - what do you mean its not funny.
Harumph again, not to mention Heaven Forfend, pish and tush!
hm.... not that I wanna get into the whole "I wanna be in your gang, your gang" thing, but I tend to say "Heaven forfend" to.
mind you, as seen already I also say a helluva lot of other gibberish too!
Andy(?) - what is that show that does the whole etymology thing? I also say "Geeny Mac!"(sp?) and even my family have no idea why I say it or got it from
Goodness only knows Anne - must be a Rural thing? I notice that I used it in another blog as well. Must rotate my expressions, 100 times for Wednesday VP.
Sb24
I've been thinking about saying a "great face for Radio" and all that.
I think kind people would say I've got a great voice for blogging....
whisht 26, Word of Mouth?
Can't stop, still writing my lines...
You’ve just missed (or just heard) Word of Mouth, in which they rounded up their recent etymology explorations.
thanks Valery (and Dr. hack)
gonna check out the Word of Mouth blog. I mean - a programme about words has just gotto have a blog... right?
It certainly has a message board.
a message board you can't search (seemingly)...
doh! that'll account for at least some of the 862 message threads... who really is going to check all thr thread beginnings and hope that the thread kept to the subject...?
maybe i ask too much.
anyway, thanks for pointing me in the right direction!!
Thanks to 'Word of Mouth' I now have the excuse to write the word "euphemism" and know much more about prison slang.
Of course, other ways to learn about prison slang are available.
Ach - but you can't beat Michael Rosen for the entertainment value Whisht- he's great.
Now there's another nice voice to listen to.
How else were you planning on learning the prison slang then?
Prison slang? oh, I picked up a little watching Porrige all those years ago...
Of course, there was my roomate "Bubba", but that's another story...
Do tell?
