Stand by for a new beach

Eddie Mair | 05:41 UK time, Tuesday, 14 November 2006

In response to an email suggestion (from Liz), and in the light of reports of the beach on Day One crashing computers worldwide, I'm going to start a new thread in a moment, with a new beach. It can never replace the original, but will hopefully offer new delights.

I've chosen this moment because a) I've had no coffee yet and b) at the time of writing, there are 9,953 comments on this blog. You amazing lot. Stand by for a new beach, to mark our 10,000th comment - which I guess will be made...on the new beach.. Thank you.

That's odd, I posted at 5.50, had been running a virus scan overnight, and woke up to find this new one. So where's my post gone?

Now I'm being told I'm maliciously fast... harrumph

That's weird. At sometime between 12 and 1 this morning there were already over 1,000 comments on the old beach so how come there are 9,953 at 5.41 am?

Is Eddie's computer really that slow or is he emplyong some clever jiggery pokery which means he posted while he was drinking his cocoa last night and it didn't go up until this morning?

And what about Bis Sister's prize for being the 1,000th poster?

Don't forget to fetch those plans for the beach hut/bar!

    See you all tomorrow.

gossipmistress (~3), the answer lies in the question (didn't they used to say that when you were doing "comprehension" exercises as a nipper? - oo, another N-word) 9,953 - 1,000 I guess Eddie is talking about almost 10,000 comments on the whole frog. Gosh, what a lot.

Now I'm really confused, Eddie - went to the other beach, near the wood, in August first.

I'll have to pop back and get my stuff.

Deepthought, did you move your tools?

Gossipmistress! Can't you tell the difference between 1000 (the rough Day One total) and the amount of comments on the entire blog. We are inching towards TEN THOUSAND

Can we froggers club together and buy Eddie a big latte (or however he likes his coffee) and some scrummy pastries/panini/haggis to thank him for getting up so early to come to our aid? If he's feeling shy, we can arrange for it to be set out on the beach bar, and the rest of the Frog could retire another part of the Beach for a while ...

Gossipmistress: I think the other postings refers to the 'total' blog. Which just goes to show that The Beach/Day One contains over a tenth of the whole blog (now nearly 3 months' worth).

No doubt Eddie will come up with a surprise for us when we hit 10,000 (could well be later today!)

oh Eddie, Eddie, Eddie that should be NUMBER of comments not amount ( which is for weight) and don't take offence because I'm only forewarnign you, Val P will be after you with a bit stick.
This is my most hated grammar error in all broadcasting and obviosuly you were still half asleep when you posted or you would never have made it.

Don't get me started on numbers in the media.

I think all reporters should be given some basic arithmetic training. Then they might avoid such horrors as, "The new figure is ten times less than the old figure." (This is an impossibility, unless it goes negative.)

And when they say something new costs 3 times more, I never know whether to believe them (3 x more means new price = 4 x as much).

oh yes, decimated is another one.

moving on from numbers, I want to scream every time I hear the phrase ' it was an emotional rollercoaster', not that I am saying Eddie has ever said that.

Ed, forewarnign, yeah. I have this computer that always types ign instead of ing and I don't always notice that I haven't managed to catch and stop it.

As mentioned before, has inline spellchecking. A few minutes ago, my son crashed the computer, and had to re-start (hard reset, i.e. power down/back) and when I logged back in, firefox re-established the session, complete with half-written posting. How cool is that? And it's free and also free of Gates & Co.....

At least you're unlikely to call me Inglehart, as often happens....

And, while we're at it can someone higher the heating...
