I won't lie to you.

Eddie Mair | 16:02 UK time, Friday, 15 December 2006

Last night the News Gods smiled on us - indeed they beamed giant sunny smiles, as I noted in an earlier posting.

Tonight, the news cupboard (as an esteemed colleague from the newsroom is wont to say) is rather bare.

We've decided that instead of filling, as we normally do, we're just going to stop when we've run out of news. If anyone in Radio 4 continuity is reading this...stand by with something musically substantial.

Go and drag a government spokesman into the program and grill him about how ethical it is for the government to order the SFO to halt a corruption investigation because the saudis have got upset.

Or get some of the saner sounding conspiracy theorists onto the prog and ask them why they think anyone would bother to murder Diana.

Or get a profiler from the FBI to comment on how useful or otherwise profiling really is in police investigations. Is it any more successful then bring in self procalimed psychics? Is it indeed any different to bringing in self proclaimed psychics.

Honestly Eddie, get a grip. If you think there isn't any news out there, go and make some!! I thought all journalists learned that at day 1 of journalist school.

I shall listen to the program with interest to see what you do fill it up with!

Israel had closed the Gaza border on Thursday, saying the tens of millions Mr Haniya was carrying as he returned from his foreign trip would fund "terrorist operations".

Mr Haniya crossed late in the evening following hours of intense negotiations, leaving the reported $30m (拢15.3m) on the Egyptian side with his aides.

OK now, so let me get this straight.

There has been a big investigation into corruption over an arms deal with a major middle eastern country..
It's a country whose nationals have had a key role in world terrorism and against whom we are fighting a 'War on Terror'...
They have huge quantities of arms which we sold to them, and are known for human rights violations....
They are known to have tortured British citizens into confessing to terrorist crimes they did not commit...
Women have very few rights there and it does not have a democratic constitution...
It has huge oil reserves that we might just want to get our hands on...

So we are going to invade, bring about regime change and spread democracy throughout the land with the help of America and other allies...

Woops - silly me - it's Saudia Arabia we're talking about and British jobs.

    Funny that.

    Or not.

The surreal experience of sitting in a very ordinary pub in Inverurie while the wives of oil men said goodbye to a friend of mine who was off to Abu Dhabi with her family. It was a salutory experience because a lot of relationships had not survived the repeated & prolonged periods of separation, & it was surreal because the exotica of the Arabia was such a contrast with the north Scotland we were sitting in.

So my point is, isn't it always all about oil? Isn't Iraq about oil? Wouldn't it be better to invest in alternative fuel sources than trident missiles, so that we don't have to appease or fight, those who own the sources of ability to function.

There is a difference between individual ethics which may be culturally influenced, and internationally agreed standards, such as the Convention on Human Rights.

If I've understood it correctly, the abandoned investigation related to behaviour which would have been illegal under international agreements that Britain has signed up to, designed as anti-corruption measures.

Therefore in the eyes of the world we are seen to be ignoring standards which we have said publicly should be adhered to by everyone. A case now it appears of 'do as I say, not as I do'.
