As you know the funny thing about this Blog
is that things start up almost accidentally and then take on a life of their own. For example. Yvonne's report about paintings inspired by the Shipping Forecast (or as someone wondered on a thread - the shipping forecast) caused one listener to send us a paining of South East Iceland (see the thread: "The programme last night featured")
Now Leslie Burgher gets in touch with this:
"Since you have a picture of South East Iceland I attach one of Fair Isle. This photo was taken whilst flying from Orkney to Shetland last September on the scheduled flight."
I have a feeling this may run and run...
Leslie Burgher: Your picture is stunning. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Eddie: After making me feel sea sick yesterday, are you trying to bring on my vertigo today? :¬)
Wow what a great photo! It looks unreal, like a model.
Big Sis - haven't you already sent in a picture of 'Dogger'??!
Leslie - thanks! This blog always has the power to lift my spirits and the pic was an extra special bonus x
I can send in a picture of Humber - although a rather poor quality one taken from a beach.
What will this be called, "Window On Your Shipping Regions"? It might be quite fun to see if we can get all of them between us.
What a beautiful photograph; thank you.
It's a lovely photograph.
When I was a child long ago,
listening to the radio
with my grandma, sipping tea,
tuning in to the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳
for the shipping forecast every day,
taking in each word they'd say.
Dogger, Fisher, German Bight;
precipitation within sight
away from land and out to sea
with moderate visibility.
Force four South, veering South West later,
warm winds coming from the Equator.
Bailey, Malin, Hebrides;
fog clearing in the gentle breeze.
Winds freshen in Finisterre
blowing rain clouds here and there.
Dover, Wight and Portland Bill,
gale force winds are raging still.
Lundy, Fastnet, Irish Sea
have moderate visibility.
Heavy rain in Tyne and Forth
and a good force nine is moving North
to Cromarty, where waves are high,
almost reaching for the sky.
While down in Plymouth the seas are calm
the forecast says it's turning warm,
over a thousand millibars
In clearing skies you'll see the stars.
Grandma, peering over her tea
says "moderate visibility".
Eddie,
Have you got a photograph of Prayer for the Day?
BTW: There's still too much of a time gap before the bongs. Try and shape up. ;-)
Lovely photo Leslie! Lovely poem Gladys!
It's never been the same since the loss of Finisterre, a name which intrigued me as a child in the 50s when I used to hear the shipping forecast.
But I'll spare you a picture of me as representing an area. (Unless there's huge public demand)
Reverend Green (8); my solution is to insert the 1984 signature tune, which can then be faded at the exact time.
Jennifer Bailey (10) I'm huge, I'm a member of the public, and I DEMAND!!!!!
Gillian (12) I'm flattered and I listen to the demands of my huge public - so I will - except I'm not sure how I post a picture. Tell me and I will.
What a splendid piece of blogging. Great picture. Thank you Leslie, Eric and Marc. It does look almost too good to be true.
Jennifer (10), I add my voice to Gillian's. And I do miss Finisterre. It's so evocative sounding. The end of the earth! Here be dragons.
Love the poem, too, Gladys (and great name).
I think this one may indeed run and run
Grr! Leave it! (with reference to the theme tune from the 1980s)
Jen (15) send an email to PM@bbc.co.uk. Please mark it with something obvious!
I've got a handerkerchief with a map of all the shipping areas. I could send that?
Perhaps not.
(and that was intentional tasteless, but intentional)
Frances O (14) You do Miss Finisterre? You and Jennifer have started something. See you all on the Beach later, fancy dress obligatory! I'll be German Bight, so watch out.
Frances and SSC, congratulations on having your poems read out. Did it sound like you?
*whispers* I've always imagined SSC to be male.....sorry if that offends.
Gillian - Me too.
Gillian (18) Hahahahahaha! :-)
I have posted to Shannon, both the Faeroes and fair Isle and asked them all to come over too...!
Has SSC been s*x*d?!
