There is HUGE concern

Eddie Mair | 13:01 UK time, Monday, 5 March 2007

in our office about Elaine Paige, who has a birthday today.

The Press Association says she is 59. The Guardian puts the age at 55.

How old is she?

Mr. Mayor, one is shocked. Shocked, I say. Knowest thou not the impropriety of enquiring into the age of a lady? Really, what is the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ coming to.

Pssst. A hint. PA or The Guardian? Which would you say has a bigger reputation for typos?

    Newsletter's arrived! At about 1.25.

Elaine Paige is, of course 21.

My grandmother was 21 for a long time. This confused me as a little girl, since my Mummy was therefore older than her, which didn't quite seems to work out. But it must be true, because grown-ups never lie. At least that's what they say.

Well acording to my own research she was born in 1948 - which makes her 59.

However, as I've proved with other Diva's who've claimed similar ages. The only definitive way of I found was offering to get a prescription made up. She had claimed she was 55 -- however amazingly I was told by the chemist that there was no payment required as she was retired !

MY GOD - if we don't know Elaine Paige's age how can anythng be deemd as 'true'??

    The centre can... not... ...hold...

Thank goodness that this sort of thing won't happen when we all have I.D. cards.

Oh for that brighter more assured future where we will never doubt anything about anyone as we will be able to simply 'scan' them.

Systems will never be wrong. Journalism will simply be the stating of known facts. Doubt and fear will be eradicated.

    Oh Brave Known World.

worth the billions alone, I reckon.

Happy birthday Roberto! Hope you have a really lovely day.

Eliane Paige must be 59 as she is definitely older than my mother. I'm not big on knowing how old people are, but my mother is, so I always know whether a famous woman of her generation is older than her or not. Elaine Paige check; Lulu - check; Twiggy - check; Debbie Harry - check. I could go on but I think you've all heard more than enough about my mother lately. I've been a liitle bit obsessed, I admit.

    :-)

Whisht - Fully-paidup Conspiracy Theorist Son tells me that it's already easy, with a hand held scanner in your pocket (?) to read the chips on the new passports as they are not encrypted. So now we can find out anyone's age without resorting to Wikepedia?

    Wolf - nice strapline :o)

Roberto - Many Happy Returns of the Day!

Aperitif: I have to confess to only finding out that Debbie Harry was older than my mum fairly recently. I "discovered" towards the end of adolesence that she was "the same age as her", which was painful enough...

I recently saw her live (as in "live!" and not having moved in) at the Manchester Apollo. I expect the counselling will only be neccessary for another few years.

Sparkles (14), thanks -- you made me realise what Paul (10) was referring to. Before that I was with Valery (13) -- and thanks Valery too.

Jason (15) I'm really sorry for laughing at your post -- I can see you are in pain about this but, truly, I could not help myself. Thanks especially for the clarification: if I had been about to believe that Debbie Harry/your mother/my mother/anybody else's mother had recently become resident -- and exhibitionist -- in the Manchester Apollo, I would certainly have had my misunderstanding ironed out. You're a star :-)... tee hees off to make a coffee ...

    Eddie,

Whatever you do about finding Elaine's age, don't repeat the old mistake :-

A reporter who was uncertain as to Cary Grant's age, sent Cary a telegram asking

    "How old Cary Grant?"

    only to receive the reply:

"Old Cary Grant fine! how you"

Val P - ahh.... conspiracies.... actually I think the whole ID card enterprise is odd. I haven't heard a convincing argument for them at all. and there are good arguments (cutting bureaucracy, cutting fraud) but none of the ones used by the government stack up.

and cock-up is far far more likely than conspiracy... like the accidental release of personal data that sometimes (if rarely) happens.

unfortunately, once is enough to really affect people's lives when that kind of inter-connectivity is achieved.

    hey ho.

I had considered posting this yesterday, but refrained as it was Roberto’s birthday. But it isn’t today, so, on the subject of age and relationships, here’s a reminder of just how confusing it can get, courtesy of Mr. Phil Harris:

I met a guy today I knew years ago, when he was 23,
And he was married to a widow who was as pretty as could be.
Now this widow had a grown-up daughter who had beautiful hair of red,
And this guy's father fell in love with her and soon the two were wed.

Now this made the guy's dad his son-in-law and changed his very life
For his daughter was his mother because she was his father's wife.
Now to complicate the matter even though it brought him joy,
He soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy.

Now his little baby then became a brother-in-law to his dad,
And so became his uncle and though that made him very sad,
For if the baby was his uncle then that also made him brother,
Of the widow's grown-up daughter who was of course his step-mother

Now his father's wife had a son who kept them on the run,
So he became his grandchild for he was his daughter's son.
His wife is now his mother's mother and of course that makes him blue
Because although she's his wife she's his grandmother too!

Now his wife is his grandmother, then he is her grandchild.
And every time the guy thinks of it it nearly drives him wild!
For now he has become the strangest case you ever saw,
As husband of his grandmother, he's his own grandpa!

On a more prosaic note, many companies never used to twig that if they only took details of your AGE rather than your date of birth, whenever they looked up how old you were [invariably for 'marketing' purposes] you would still be in the same demographic as when you first became a customer.

Could be worth a try in case some companies haven't cottoned on, Eddie, in which case you could be '37 and holding' for the next decade..
