Some great points from Max about how to structure a speech. I work as someone who trains people in making speeches and business presentations though - so I wonder if he never gets annoyed by thinking "God, that was a great line but they bloody ruined it....."?

My work involves visiting older people in nursing and residnetial homes many with dementia or Alziemers . Having studied with the OU and read some of John's work with dementia clients I can vouch that giving people time and being prepared to listen does yield results.
Relatives and carers said to me "you won't get much out of this lady her dementia is bad". What I learnt was about her life as a young widow with four children she had to bring up alone. How she made all their clothes and how she coped. She was also able to tell me about her faith and how the priest came around to say " should you not have another baby on the way".
The carers and her family felt that it had been a good day that she had spoken so much. Like John I feel it was that I had given her quality time and been happy to listen to what she said.
Complain about this postwith ref. to the poet and alzheimers, I worked with dementia clients for 8 years and he is soooooooooooooo right you must listen, you can find the essence of the person. Unfortunatly the professionals don't give people time (often they don't have it ... more often they can't be bothered.) We treat our old people disgracfully in this counrty in the main.
Complain about this postWe pay staff in homes the minimum wage generally yet expect them to be 'medical doctors, counsellors, pshycoligists and all else that is required..... its a disgrace and we should hang our heads in shame.
Yes we have strucutes to 'supposedly' keep people happy and safe', but its just lip service and your banging your head against a brick wall.
These people are so vunerable to abuse of all kinds the start being lack of respect! God help us because its in line for many of us........ you close your eyes to this level of care at your peril.
