Karaoke Nights
Next week is Saturday Live's inaugural Christmas party and we're not talking lukewarm liebfraumilch and Hi Ho Silver Lining 'round our handbags. No, we thought we'd go high end and head off to Soho for some karaoke. I can't remember who came up with this ridiculous idea although I have a sneaking suspician it was Fi which suggests that velvety voice of hers is good for singing too. Why else would she suggest such ritual humiliation for the rest of us if she didn't know she could deliver pitch perfect renditions of the Karen Carpenter songbook?
Everyone is being rather coy about their karaoke catalogue. I suspect JP - a wonderful tenor - will favour a Josef Locke number and Torquil has been humming along to Steely Dan's Reelin' In The Years so that might give us a clue. Maria's Radio 1 days means she'll probably go for something unbearably down-there-with-the-kids although her face did light up when we played If I Had A Hammer by Trini Lopez - one of Tom Parker Bowles's inheritance tracks as featured in the programme last week. As for myself, I know my limitations so I'm thinking along the lines of Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus. It's got an indecently lengthy intro which means most people will have gone to the bar by the time the vocal starts and there aren't many words either. Must start rehearsing - Billy the Goat is dead, undead, undead, undead.....By the way, I can assure you that no portion of the licence fee will pay for our evening's entertainment.
This is a great article. My best wishes for all of you in your innaugural party.
Complain about this postI did like "If I Had A Hammer" by Trini Lopez. I remember hearing one of my female cousins sing it to me when I was a little boy in the 1960's. She was 15 years old and I was 5 years old.
