War Surgeon
Jonathan Kaplan is a war surgeon who has worked in some of the most violent conflicts of the last three decades including Mozambique, Angola, Eritrea and and in both the first and the ongoing Iraq wars.
It鈥檚 been a nomadic existence during which he has avoided kidnap, bullets, landmines, disease and death obviously. His work has saved lives and brought comfort to many, yet he says that he doesn鈥檛 think he has made a significant difference.
Jonathan has written about his experiences in his recent book Contact Wounds, published by Picador.
My friend had heard part of the programme on Saturday, and thought that Jonathan had written a book on his experiences.
Complain about this postI have also worked in a war zone and presently contemplating going back again, i would be interested if you have any further information.
Thanks
Hi Jon. Heared you on Saturday Live and thought I'd say 'hello' having last met you whilst working at Hammersmith Hospital some 23 years ago! In fact it was you who suggested I should branch out and work abroad, which I did. Since then I've been working in the emergency and development public nutrition field in many different contexts in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
Keep safe and I hope that one day our paths will cross again so that we can compare notes. Meanwhile, I shall order your latest book and find out a bit more about 'war surgery'.
Warm wishes,
Carmel
