There has been considerable reaction to the news so I feel it's important to explain some of the background behind what has happened.

The headline is that under a seven-year deal starting next season, we will be showing 10 of the races in the F1 calendar, plus the corresponding qualifying and practice sessions, live on ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ TV.

We will broadcast extended highlights for the rest of the grands prix just a few hours after the chequered flag has been waved. Sky will have live action from all races, qualifying and practice sessions.

There has been a great deal of unsettling speculation recently about F1 rights. Amid all the rumour and counter-rumour, our production and on-air team have shown huge professionalism, dedication and expertise to keep delivering the high quality output that has become the trademark of our coverage.

It's not just self-confessed 'anoraks' like me who have succumbed to Olympic fever; anticipation is definitely growing. We've seen the unprecedented demand for tickets and the resulting controversy; the first test events have taken place and we'll be marking 'one year to go' tomorrow (Wednesday 27 July).

More attention is focused on our athletes too as they compete in major events this summer for the last time before the Games next year. Over the next few months, we can look forward to events such as the World Athletics and World Rowing Championships (with World Swimming going on now) where results and performances will be judged in the light of possible medal prospects in London next summer.

The ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ will be looking to highlight those who have the potential to join Team GB next summer and make an impact on the global sporting stage. There will be great, compelling stories between now and the Games from across all 26 sports and we will be featuring them in our programmes and on the .

Today marks the start of something big for bbc.co.uk/sport - but then I would say that, wouldn't I?

Sportsday Live is our rolling sports news service aimed at bringing you the best news and highlights as they happen, as well as providing you with links to read or watch more. We'll also capture the conversation that exists around sport.

The aim? Simple. To provide one place for sports fans to get - at-a-glance - the best of the day's news and views from right across the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳.

From all that's great right here on the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Sport website, to 5live, the World Service, the News Channel, and from to Radio Humberside, we'll take the highlights from what's happening and report them in short, bite-size chunks.

But it won't just be about the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳. We'll monitor other media, too, because there's a whole host of great journalism and stories out there that you need to know about.

So we'll go and find them and present the best of them in Sportsday Live, giving you the web link to enable you to read more yourself. Because, although we're fiercely proud of what we do at ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Sport, this service is about helping you find what you want.
