Experimenting with South African helmets

My children are all making to wear at school. The paintwork above is their handiwork (a bold, experimental mixture of oils, acrylics, felt-tips and spray paints) and the carving work was a combination of me, a wobbly penknife and some blisters.
The plastic tends to crack if you bend it too hard, and I've been toying with the idea of applying some heat. Any advice - on carving, bending and painting - would be gratefully received.
