  2. National Library prepares for Christopher Williams retrospective

    Laura Chamberlain

Staff at the National Library of Wales are gearing up for a major new retrospective of the works of Maesteg-born artist Christopher Williams. The retrospective, which will feature around 150 paintings by the artist, is currently being set up at the Aberystwyth library ahead of the opening in July. Inspecting a painting by Williams Removing one of Williams' pieces from Maesteg Town Hall The curation of such a large exhibition sounds wonderfully artistic and creative doesn't it? Yet there's some manual labour involved in the process too, if these pictures sent by the team at the National Library are anything to go by. Williams is perhaps best known for his imposing classical subjects, including The Awakening of Wales and his large scale classical interpretations of the Mabinogion. He was also a notable portrait painter and was commissioned to paint the portraits of important figures of the day, such as David Lloyd George, and commemorative paintings such as the Investiture of Edward, Prince of Wales at Caernarfon Castle in 1911. This retrospective will also show more the spontaneous paintings that Williams made of the Welsh coast, some of which have never been seen, which give an insight into the artist's personality and his love of Wales. Removing one of Williams' pieces from Maesteg Town Council Williams gifted many of his paintings to his home town, so the library has been busy transporting many of the paintings from Maesteg in readiness for the exhibition. Pieces from private and public collections have also been gathered for the retrospective. The sheer size of some of the paintings going on show make manoeuvring them into position a little tricky: when was the last time you had to erect a scaffold to remove a painting from the wall in your front room? The exhibition, Christopher Williams 1873-1934: A Retrospective, will run from 7 July until 22 September 2012 and will be officially opened by artist and former MP Kim Howells on Saturday 14 July. Howells presented the 2011 成人论坛 Wales series Framing Wales, which featured Williams and his works. Watch this clip from the series, in which he talks to Robert Meyrick, head of Aberystwyth School of Art, about the artist. If you've ever wondered what 拢50 million could buy you in terms of a Renaissance masterpiece then a trip to the National Museum in Cardiff could be on the cards. Titian's Diana and Actaeon is currently on tour from the National Gallery and will be displayed in Cardiff from Thursday 19 April to Sunday 17 June 2012. Bought jointly by the National Gallery and National Galleries of Scotland with contributions from The Scottish Government, the National Heritage Memorial Fund, The Monument Trust, The Art Fund and through public appeal, 2008 Diana and Actaeon is one of six large-scale mythologies by Titian inspired by the work of the poet Ovid, and were created for King Philip II of Spain. The painting is jointly owned by the National Galleries of Scotland and the National Gallery, London. It was acquired for the nation in 2009 for 拢50 million, which was made possible with the generous contributions from private and public donors. Last month one of its companions, Diana and Callisto, was secured for the nation for 拢45m. Anne Pritchard, the assistant curator of historic art at National Museum Wales, said: "We are delighted to be hosting such an important and beautiful painting here in Cardiff. It is a true masterpiece! "Titian's Diana and Actaeon is probably the UK's most significant public purchase of art in recent years and it's a unique opportunity for people to come and see it up close. 6. Wonder Chamber at Ffotogallery

    Laura Chamberlain

The latest exhibition at Ffotogallery explores the relationship between science, museology and art. Wonder Chamber is a solo exhibition of work by Wales-based artist Dr Karen Ingham, who is also a reader in Art, Science and Technology Interactions at Swansea Metropolitan University. Piece of Mind Mask, 2010 漏 Karen Ingham Ingham's work explores how scientific ideas and processes inform contemporary image making. This exhibition at the Penarth-based gallery brings together various bodies of work that she has created over the past decade. The exhibition plays with the idea of the Wunderkammer, and how diverse and bizarre items on display in museums centuries ago were divided into a standard classification system. One of the key ideas in Ingham's practice is to play on and subvert the way objects are collected, archived and displayed in science museums, putting them in the service of contemporary art. The Eye of the Lens, 2010 漏 Karen Ingham Wonder Chamber runs at Ffotogallery at Turner House, Plymouth Rd in Penarth until 14 April 2012. Karen Ingham will give a talk about her work and the exhibition on Thursday 22 March at 6.30pm. The event is free but booking is essential, so for further details visit ffotogallery.org.
