Migrant workers need our help
The has published a report calling for more support for migrant workers to help them to feel safe and integrate successfully with locals.
Last night's took a closer look at the report - which doesn't appear to be available on the NWREN website - which draws the following conclusions:
- All workers earn the minimum wage but in many cases work longer hours than paid for and paid less than told at interview
- Migrant workers want to participate in society but retain a 'voice of their own'
- Information on basic health care should be available in different languages
- Flintshire Council has a 'myth busting' leaflet which challenges the misconceptions surrounding migrant workers. More initiatives of this type are needed.
- Police officers could be encouraged to learn new European languages and special constables should be recruited from the migrant worker population.
The report came after it emerged there had been a big rise in race-hate crimes in the area, according to the Leader newspaper.
