Jubilee Tower anniversary approaches

Ahead of the 200th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of Moel Famau's Jubilee Tower we've had this striking black and white photo added to our Flickr group by .
A day of celebrations will be held on 24 October, a day before the 200th anniversary of the building of the tower. Then, 5000 people processed to the top of Moel Famau to watch the foundation stone being laid and this will be replicated with a modern-day procession to the summit as well as other events listed on the website.
Mold writer Lorna Jenner has used the research of two local historians, Chris Williams and Tony King, to put together the booklet which describes how the Egyptian-style tower (pictured right) was finally built after local magistrate Lord Kenyon came up with additional money after response to an appeal for funds from the public was less than enthusiastic.
The project was also dogged by disagreements between the architect and the surveyor. By 1846 one corner of it had collapsed and it continued to deteriorate until a gale in 1862 led to its total collapse.
Various attempts to re-build the tower came to nothing until, in 1970, it was tidied up to what we can see today.
