Technical difficulties and today's debates

Kevin Anderson | 12:04 UK time, Wednesday, 14 June 2006

Sorry for the delay in posting, I've been having a little trouble with our software. It's probably all of the footie fans going to the World Cup blog and our sister blog World Cup Have Your Say.

But you don't need to go there to talk about the World Cup. Today, we're going to be talking about the dark side of the World Cup. Here in the UK last weekend there were what some police called 'mini-riots' at . There was also some unrest . But that's just the start.

Indonesian Muslim cleric released, Aussies upset

Another topic that we're looking to discuss today is the release of Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir. He has been released from prison after serving two years for conspiracy in connection with the 2002 Bali bombings.

Australian leaders and victims of the bombings have . Australian Prime Minister John Howard said he had a message for the Indonesian government:

I want them to understand from me on behalf of the government how extremely disappointed, even distressed, millions of Australians will be at the release of Abu Bakar Ba'asyir.

There is a debate already going on at the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ News website . Here are some of the comments people are making:

Ian in Whitwick had this to say:

I have cancelled 2 trips to Indonesia (one business, one holiday) because of their failure to tackle the extremists that openly operate there. Releasing this lynch pin in the Indonesian extremists operation has not given me any confidence in their Governments will or ability to take the fight to the terrorists, & I will choose to do my business & take holidays elsewhere because of it.

But Sim in Indonesia responds:

Mr.Howard seems to be flabergasted becuase of this verdict, as if it was only the courts of Her Majesty's government which were capable doing justice. He is trying portray it as miscarraige of justice. This has become routine for Australian leaders. From sports to politics they keep reminding us of their imperial hubris. We are not your colonial subjects Mr.Howard!

That's just the start. Leave a comment there or here, and be sure to let us know how to get in touch if you want to join the programme.
