What鈥檚 the writing on the back of the birds for?
On the birds is a page from the autobiography of Fredrick Douglas. Fredrick was an enslaved person who learnt to read, even though it was illegal for enslaved people to read. Frederick Douglas said, 'Once you learn to read you will be forever free.'
What do the birds represent?
Manchester artist Emma Martin designed the birds for a special art installation at the Book Club Live event. The birds represent the freedom reading gives you.
