Backshall's Beastly Bird Bites

Find out how to make Steve Backshall's Beasty Bird Bites and use them to help birds and other wildlife in your garden or local park over winter.

You will need
  • Cheese
  • Seeds
  • Lard
  • Oats
  • Mealworms (optional)

Step one

Grate up your cheese, crush your nuts and seeds and add a handful of oats to a mixing bowl. We鈥檙e putting a few mealworms in our Beastie Bites because wildlife love them, as a treat. You can get these from your local pet shop or garden centre.

TOP TIP: Always check that the ingredients you want to use are safe for the animals you may find in your garden or local park.

Step two

With bare hands or wearing gloves, knead the mix with your hands until it all comes together.

Step three

As the lard softens you can start making your ball shapes.

Your Beasty Bites are ready!

Now all you need to do is put them into a bird feeder and watch as the birds enjoy your masterpiece.

You can also add a piece of string into the centre of your fat ball and use that to hang the ball from a tree.
