FactsThere are currently 250,000 surfers in the UK. The biggest surf normally occurs on a pushing tide, especially on the Bristol Channel coast. Croyde Bay in North Devon and Fistral Beach in Cornwall are two of the most popular surfing beaches in Britain. The first ever degree in surfing was offered by the University of Plymouth. The record for the most number of surfers on a board was broken in 1989 at Fistral Beach, Newquay. Twelve surfers rode a 37ft longboard shaped by Tim Mellors. Watergate Bay near Newquay is suitable for all ability ranges. The three-mile exposed sandy beach faces W and picks up any SW to NW swell and NE to S are offshore. Don鈥檛 bother going there if the swell鈥檚 big (over 6ft) as it just closes out. High tide banks just south of the hotel can be good. At low to mid there are peaks every 50m to choose from. Strong rips at west and eastern end. Good parking and facilities. Mellower vibe than Newquay although can get very crowded when it's on. last updated: 04/03/2008 at 12:31 You are in: Cornwall > Surfing & extreme sports > Beach Guide > Watergate Bay |
