Ryan Hewitt only started karting when his parents took him to the Water Mill track for his eleventh birthday, in his first championship Ryan came second. Since then he has become East Anglian champion and is currently in fourth place in this year's Super One competition.

He is aiming to climb the table in his first season in Super One and finish in the top three. This will involve a lot of effort on his part. His nearest course is more than an hour away from his Derbyshire home so he has to spend a long time travelling. Ryan is grateful to his parents who drive him up and down the country ensuring he can practice and compete to the highest levels possible.

Ryan also acknowledges that he owes a great deal to his school: "We've got kind of a sponsor, our school helps us out."

In particular he thanks his PE teacher, Miss Hardy: "She helps us a lot, she tries to get us days off school so we can go testing."听

Already Ryan is becoming used to the limelight which typifies the career of a motor racer. Last year he competed in his first televised event, the London Cup finishing a creditable sixth out of 30 competitors. He hopes to go back to this year's event, which will again be in front of the cameras, and perform better still.

Topping the podium

Ryan is becoming accustomed to success. On top of winning the East Anglian championship in the winter he has mounted several podium finishes at various events all over the country. He is also vice-champion of F6 and came second in the South West championship.

Despite this early success Ryan is not satisfied and has much higher ambitions. He aims to continue progressing through the various stages of competition in karting and eventually reach F1 emulating his hero Lewis Hamilton.
