The Big PictureYou are in: Derby > The Big Picture > Vox Pop: QUAD and the arts in Derby Vox Pop: QUAD and the arts in DerbyWhat are your views on the new QUAD building and the arts in Derby and Derbyshire? We've been canvassing a few views - you can add your views to the debate by using the "State of the Arts" link below. David Downing - Minister of the Central united Reformed ChurchOn QUAD: "I think it's quite exciting with thw possibilities you can do with arts and I think getting Bill Drummond to come here and be part of the opening shows that actually this is going to be something different artistically in the centre of Derby. "I think that if you look at the different architectures you've got here this is outstandingly modern. I'm glad that here we can be quite adventurous and talk about architecture whether we like it or not." Will you use QUAD?: "Fairly regularly, I hope. I hope there's going to be a good enough programme that will attract me in there to look at the arts." Mr & Mrs Gillman, ChaddesdenOn QUAD: (Mr Gillman) "I don't like the design at all. I think it's ugly, personally, given that it's in the centre of Derby. I think it spoils the ambience of the area with the nice, old town hall and the register office next door." "It's for the arts but it's not for people who are old, like us, really.... The young people, yes, I suppose it will be an asset to them." (Mrs Gillman) "I should like to go round and see it but I don't know what the layout is or whether there are any lifts." Farug Anwari, DerbyOn QUAD: "I think it's good. "It's fun, actually, for the children and for the families. It's the first time I've seen it. I'm happy about it!" Will you use QUAD?: "Oh yes, of course, at least, on the weekends. Hayley Neilson and Bridget LeeOn QUAD: (Hayley) "Really nice. I think it's ok." On Derby's architecture: "It's OK - not too bad... some nice old buildings.I prefer the older buildings to the new buildings like the Westfield Centre - it's a big grey box in the sky - it's horrible. But, yeah, it's really nice - I like Derby." Nick Hodgson - DerbyOn QUAD: "I actually like it... the actual shape of it and obviously I think it's going to be good for the city as well." Will you use QUAD?: "I've not been in but... I've seen photos of what the inside's like - and it looks pretty cool! "I'm not really an art person but if I was I would definitely go and have a look around it. If I needed to use it then, yeah, I would. "It's nice to be in a city that's having loads of new stuff." Philip Gaskin - AlvastonOn QUAD: "I think it's quite nice... quite modern - it looks old as well with the stone cladding on it... sort of blends in quite well, I think. We're going to have a look as soon as it's open." Will you use QUAD?: "I don't know. It depends on what they have on - what exhibitions they have." On Derby's architecture: "Well I think it moves along with the years. Everyone says the Assembly Rooms look old - but they didn't look old at the time (they were built) - we'll probably say in a few years time that the QUAD building looks old. That's how it goes, isn't it! last updated: 19/09/2008 at 11:29 Have Your SayWhat do you think of the QUAD building? Will you use it? Have your say here...
I love the design of the Quad, I hear all the time off of my peers how they don't like the look of it, but I personally think it's inspiring and a unique design... fantastic.
a waste of money i would rather have a toilet
Lacks soul and feels a little claustrophobic downstairs, unlike the outside which attracts the eye.The idea of the Quad is excellent and what Derby desperately needs but the execution inside isn't that imaginative as it could have been.
I was very dissappointed that the two cinemas could not also be used for theatre and musical presentations. As it is, I'll probably never go in it again.
What happened to the 1700 people sound event? Was it ever finished? Was the 拢20000 paid out. Was a copy saved or was it just erased? If so this was a complete waste on a project that only a fool could envision. It should have at least been saved for posterity to show that while the rest of the world went broke Derby Quad had money to burn sorry erase.
I like the new building, the modern shape certainly catches your eye. Being an architect myself i love its appearance and shape, it must have been quite an interesting project to design and quite hard i imagine. The architects have done well to acheive this affect, (its modern shape) and also fitting it in with its surroundings using the finishes alone. great job, looks good!
i think it's great it's a really good building that will make Derby seem a lot better
It's arrogant!
Fantastic!Derby is very lucky to have this amazing arts facility.I think it will be state of the art, and really cutting edge- in visual art and film.Plus a lovely cafe to soak up the ambience! You are in: Derby > The Big Picture > Vox Pop: QUAD and the arts in Derby |
