Rebecca Worthley

Radio 2's current superstar

Rebecca Worthley

Already an unsigned star of Radio 2, Exeter based Rebecca Worthley is releasing her first EP to the wider public.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.
A: I've been a singer/songwriter since I taught myself the guitar at sweet sixteen but my musical journey started as a child dancing and singing round my Grandfather's piano with my sisters.

My songs capture some of this careless innocence with quirky melodies and lyrics.

With two friends, in a distinctly yellow spare room, I recorded my first full length album in 2005 and that's thrown me headlong into the music world.

At the moment I live in Exeter and I dont have a regular band but I play live with a guitarist, Andrew.

Q: What three words would you use to describe your music?
A: Acoustic Folk Pop

Q: What's the song you've chosen to demo?
A: "Fine Day", it's a song inspired by my two-year-old niece and muses on the curiosity and wonder of childhood.

It's something which can be easily forgotten in a world of pressure and responsibilities, it's a nostalgic, uplifting, open road song.

Q: What do you think of the current music scene?
A: It's an exciting time to be a musician, with the explosion of MySpace and other internet sites it is much easier to find good quality independent music and not rely on what other people tell us to like.

I love being part of the underground music scene, I've met some wonderful musicians and extremely generous people.

Q: What's been your most memorable gig and why?
A: I love playing outside on a summer's day as I've done a number of times on Exeter's Cathedral Green for various events.

Nothing beats having the sun on your face and singing to a bunch of really chilled out people.

I was also delighted to get frequent national airplay on Bob Harris’ ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Radio 2 show due to a large number of requests from Radio 2 listeners and he tipped me as a breakout act for 2007.

Fellow ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Radio 2 presenter, Jeremy Vine, is also a fan, and wrote to me to say he was 'quite entranced' by my music!

Q: What music is in your collection?
A: I support a whole host of independent artists, most of which no one will have heard of but include Scott Matthews, a rising star, John Smith (yes that's his real name), Iko, Lovers Electric and Nick Saunders.

Also in my collection is Jose Gonzalez, KT Tunstall, Elbow, Athlete, Sarah McLachlan, I'm influenced by every piece of music I hear.

Q: If you could have three people to dinner who would it be?
A: Isabel Allende, a brilliant Chilean author, to tell me more about life on the other side of the globe and give me writing tips.

Kate Allen, the director of Amnesty International to give her a pat on the back and find out everything that's important.

A wise old female sage to show me where I'm going wrong.

Q: Complete the sentence "when I become famous..."
A: I'm looking forward to touring with a band and sharing my music with a wider audience.

Q: What's the best part of living in Devon?
A: Being surrounded by beautiful coastline and having the wilderness of the moor calling. Oh, and surfing!

Q: In your own words, sell yourself.
A: I've developed a unique and innovative sound where strong acoustic songs blend inventively with folk, chillout and rock genres.

With a strong and soulful voice I search the deep and the political, exploring issues like consumerism, violence and modes of truth.

My songwriting is brave and seeking revolution through music that is at once both haunting and calming.

In the words of Ivor Novella award winning producer Mark Hill "a truly special artist destined for greatness".
