The sky's the limit

With four days of flying displays and dozens of aircraft entertaining the public in the skies over Bournemouth beach, it is the job of flying display director Ian Sheeley to keep the event safe and running smoothly.

Ian Sheeley is used to dealing with the high pressure job of directing air displays. Originally an air traffic controller in the R.A.F, he left the Forces six years ago to work in air display management full time.

Ian will be based on the seafront in a specially constructed tower and will liaise with Bournemouth airport and other airfields where display planes are coming from.

As Ian explains: "We have a protected piece of airspace and other pilots will know to keep away. The aircraft taking part will also be aware of what is happening before and after their particular display."

Ian is confident the festival should work well: "Plenty of planning has already been done and everything should flow very smoothly with planes leaving and then returning to Bournemouth airport.

听It is easier doing a display over the sea because you don't have the same restrictions as you do over land sites and everyone gets a brilliant view."

The only problem for him could be a sea mist but Ian is confident it will be trouble free and is looking forward to four days of great displays.
