The Cultural Olympiad is a four year programme of cultural celebrations leading up to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

And to mark its launch, several arts and cultural events happened around the county, including a community interest company called Superact! which organised a 'Bandstand Marathon' - 50 simultaneous concerts around south west England, including seven around Dorset.

Stories of the sea

Elsewhere, other Dorset-based events kicking off the Cultural Olympiad included a free performance event at Bowleaze Cove in Weymouth, charting what was described as a 'dangerous sea journey' involving contributions from young people from Weymouth, Bournemouth and Poole, all of whom created their own stories of the sea.

East Cliff

In East Cliff, West Bay, artist Charlie Morrissey's new work for Dorset art project group Universal Value was shown.

Featuring large, moving projections beamed directly onto the cliff face, the Universal Value website reports that the audience found it to be an 'amazing, a very touching display of innocence and humanism.'"
