The London 2012 Olympic flag is raised

The London 2012 Olympic flag is raised

Olympic handover events

As Beijing passes the Olympic flag over to London ahead of 2012, events around the county mark the moment, including a giant beach party in Weymouth.

Weymouth beach

As the base for the Olympic sailing events of 2012, Weymouth and Portland was one of Britain's main centres for the celebrations, with special day-long festivities.

Visitors watched the closing ceremony live from Beijing, plus the handover concert in London, on the big screen on Weymouth beach.

As the Olympic flag was presented to London Mayor Boris Johnson in Beijing's Bird Nest stadium, at the same time in Weymouth, a flag was raised to huge cheers.

Watch and listen to reports from 成人论坛 South Today and 成人论坛 Radio Solent.

Bridport

At the Mound in West Bay - the nearest harbour to Portland -听 West Dorset District Councillor Ronald Coatsworth raised an official 2012 flag at 5pm, part of a programme of events organised by the Bridport 2012 group and the local RNLI.

Christchurch

Christchurch celebrated the handing over of the Olympic Flag when the Mayor Councillor David Flagg raised the flag at Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre, Stony Lane South with 2012 sailing hopeful Max Holloway. There's a photo of this - along with many others from around the county - in our Olympic Handover photo gallery.

Dorchester

In Dorchester, Town Crier Alistair Chisholm marked the handover with a cry in the town centre, and Dorset County Council's Chief Executive David Jenkins and Chairman John Peake proudly raised the flag on the steps of County Hall in Dorchester.

Sandbanks

Chinese dragon dancers 'Dragon of the South' handed the flag to Mayor of Poole, Councillor Joyce Lavender.

Sandbanks itself may be a training ground for beach volleyball players in the run up to听 2012 and the flag was raised by Matthew Ware, 17, and Luke Gray, 16, who have both been identified as Olympic hopefuls.

Parkstone based Matthew is currently sixth in the junior boys table tennis rankings, and Luke is a cyclo cross champion currently ranked second in the country.
