Southend Pi is an ambitious art project aimed at bringing the community closer together. Around a thousand volunteers braved the chilly weather on a Saturday evening to hold torches to the sky, to create an eight mile circle of light. It was the idea of Artist Paul Manners: The Essex Power Bockers took part "With this project what we wanted to do was celebrate the two elements that make up this coastal town, which is the sea and the land, and to create something that is quite challenging to a conservative area in it's thinking on art." As the sun began to set people took to the streets with their torches, and Paul along with Project Manager Anna Heim, took to the sky in a helicopter to photograph the event. Although the circle wasn't as visible from the air as hoped the sense of community spirit certainly shone through with torch bearers coming from as far away as Bristol to take part in the event.
