Alban Berg dedicated his Violin Concerto ‘to the memory of an angel’, a young woman who died aged 18 just weeks before he started writing it. Cherished by generations of violinists – including brilliant young soloist Michael Barenboim, here making his Manchester debut – it’s a deeply human work, charged with sadness, longing and joy. So, in a different way, is Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony – a favourite of Juanjo Mena, whose performances of works by the Austrian Romantic have been among the highlights of recent ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Philharmonic seasons.
