Concert Information

Conductor John Storgårds delves into the great legends mapped out in Sibelius’s mythological Lemminkäinen Suite, inspired by the nineteenth century epic Kalevala – one of the few works that can boast of sculpting Finnish national identity as much as Sibelius himself. Following this, Garrick Ohlsson leads us into a fifth legend - Rachmaninov’s fiendishly challenging Piano Concerto No. 3 known for being a daunting trial through which only a select few dare to test their mettle, this concerto is nevertheless a wondrous display of Late Romantic melody and colour.

Pre-concert performance, Foyer Bar, 6.30pm

Ahead of the concert, the Newton Piano Trio from the Royal Northern College of Music will be performing in the Foyer Bar.

Chris Newton violin
