"Top Gun" is one of those rare blockbusters that only improves with time, and its high octane flying sequences have always made it a perfect contender for immortalisation on DVD.
The good news is that you can re-live this movie on a whole new level with this disc. The bad news is that the eternally extras-shy Paramount hasn't even included the trailer. You almost feel lucky to have the scene selection. Perhaps they just want you to get to the film, which in line with all other Paramount releases to date has a remastered 5.1 track that is absolutely incredible.
Not only will you have a living room filled with jet fighters crossing between your rears but you will also find the most incredible booms coming from your sub woofer. And as if that isn't enough, Harold Faltermeyer's classic 80s score pumps out from the front, only breaking to let "Take My Breath Away" slip in to complete the trip back in time.
The picture quality is overall very good and curiously richer and sharper than the more recent "Top Gun" rip-off, "Days of Thunder", also on DVD from Paramount. Whatever problems you may have with the film, be they narrative or otherwise, it looks and sounds as sensational as it did when it came out. If you've always liked this movie, you'll love it on DVD.
