The Northwick Theatre was constructed in 1938, and the original interior followed plans by Art Deco designer, John Alexander. It was later converted from a theatre into a cinema and was intended to become the sister cinema to one already existing in Angel Street, Worcester. In 1966, the Northwick changed hands and was converted into a bingo hall, and it was used in this way until 1982, when it was abandoned. It lay empty until 1991 when a new owner, Ian Perks, took hold of the property and turned it into a venue for live music. Over the years, many top acts have appeared at the Northwick, including comedians Jo Brand and Lee Evans. There are rumours that the likes of Clark Gable and Humphrey Bogart also performed at the venue in its early years. In 2003, a request was put to the council for the historic building to become a church with community facilities, however, as the building now has new owners, this prospect is no longer foreseeable. New plans are to develop the former cinema into an antique furniture shop with a block of 16 flats to be built on the old car park. |
